Abstract

A system and method of tracking medical products provides for associating a group of medical products with a group location based on a group radio frequency identification (RF ID) device signal, where the group includes a first unit and a second unit. The first unit is associated with a first remote location based on a first unit RF ID device signal. The method further provides for associating the second unit with a second remote location based on a second remote location based on a second unit RF ID device signal. The signals uniquely identify the units and the group.

Claims (56)

1. An assembly of medical products, the assembly comprising:

a first unit of a medical product including a first unit radio frequency identification (RF ID) device, the first unit RF ID device uniquely identifying the medical product and the first unit;

a second unit of the medical product having a second unit RF ID device, the second unit RF ID device uniquely identifying the medical product and the second unit;

a first supplemental RF ID device removably attached to the first unit, the first supplemental RF ID device uniquely identifying the first unit; and

a second supplemental RF ID device removably attached to the second unit, the second supplemental RF ID device uniquely identifying the second unit.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the RF ID devices are incorporated into labels.

3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the medical product is a pharmaceutical product.

4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the medical product is a blood product.

5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the medical product is a tissue product.

6. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the RF ID devices include source data and unit number data.

7. The assembly of claim 6 wherein the RF ID devices further include drug type data, drug name data, formulation data, interaction data, dosage data, expiration date data, batch number data, indication data, contraindication data or combinations thereof.

8. The assembly of claim 6 wherein the RF ID devices further include blood donor data, blood type data, antigen data, antibody data or combinations thereof.

9. An assembly of medical products, the assembly comprising:

a first unit of a medical product including a first unit radio frequency identification (RF ID) device, the first unit RF ID device uniquely identifying the medical the product and the first unit;

a second unit of the medical product having a second unit RF ID device, the second unit RF ID device uniquely identifying the medical product and the second unit; and

packaging combining the first unit and the second unit into a group, the packaging having a group RF ID device, the group RF ID device uniquely identifying the medical product, the first unit and the second unit.

10. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the medical product is a pharmaceutical product.

11. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the medical product is a blood product.

12. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the medical product is a tissue product.

13. The assembly of claim 9 further including:

a first supplemental RF ID device removably attached to the first unit, the first supplemental RF ID device uniquely identifying the first unit; and

a second supplemental RF ID device removably attached to the second unit, the second supplemental RF ID device uniquely identifying the second unit.

14. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the RF ID devices include source data and unit number data.

15. The assembly of claim 14 wherein the RF ID devices further include drug type data, drug name data, formulation data, interaction data, dosage data, expiration date data, batch number data, indication data, contraindication data or combinations thereof.

16. The assembly of claim 14 wherein the RF ID devices further include blood donor data, blood type data, antigen data, antibody data or combinations thereof.

17. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the RF ID devices are incorporated into labels.

18. A method of tracking medical products, comprising:

associating a group of medical products with a group location based on a group radio frequency identification (RF ID) device signal, the group including a first unit and a second unit;

associating the first unit with a first remote location based on a first unit RF ID device signal; and

associating the second unit with a second remote location based on a second unit RF ID device signal, the signals uniquely identifying the units and the group.

19. The method of claim 18 further including:

receiving the group RF ID device signal, the group RF ID device signal including a group identifier, a first unit identifier and a second unit identifier;

storing the identifiers to a central database; and

storing group location data to the central database.

20. The method of claim 19 further including storing product source data to the central database based on the group RF ID device signal.

21. The method of claim 20 further including storing one or more of drug type data, drug name data, formulation data, interaction data, dosage data, expiration date data, batch number data and contraindication data to the central database.

22. The method of claim 20 further including storing one or more of blood donor data, blood type data, expiration date data, antigen data and antibody data to the central database.

23. The method of claim 18 further including:

receiving the first unit RF ID device signal, the first unit RF ID device signal including a first unit identifier;

receiving the first unit identifier and first remote location data over a network; and

storing the first unit identifier and the first remote location data to a central database of a processing system.

24. The method of claim 18 further including:

receiving the second unit RF ID device signal, the second unit RF ID device signal including a second unit identifier;

receiving the second unit identifier and second remote location data over a network; and

storing the second unit identifier and the second remote location data to a central database.

25. The method of claim 18 wherein the medical products includes pharmaceutical products, blood products, tissue products or any combination thereof.

26. A method of tracking medical products, comprising:

receiving a group RF ID device signal corresponding to a group of medical products located in a receiving area of a health care facility, the group including a first unit and a second unit, the group RF ID device signal including a group identifier, a first unit identifier and a second unit identifier;

associating the identifiers with the receiving area in a central database;

receiving a first unit RF ID device signal over a network, the first unit RF ID device signal including a first unit identifier and first remote location data, the first unit RF ID signal indicating that the first unit has moved to the first remote location;

associating the first unit identifier with the first remote location in the central database in response to receiving a first unit update signal;
