Abstract

An optical reflection device for filtering and spatially positioning individual optical channels or wavelengths. The device includes a plurality of optical members with reflective surfaces and at least one reflective layer located on the reflective surface of each optical member. In addition, the plurality of optical members are interconnected in a manner such that the reflective surfaces are oriented at predetermined slopes with respect to one another. Each reflective layer is configured to reflect a particular wavelength or channel. The plurality of optical members are interconnected in a manner that allows each optical member to reflect an individual channel at a unique angle with respect to the other optical members. This configuration allows the optical reflection device to individually reflect and filter channels that are dispersed from some form of dispersing member, such as a prism or a diffraction grating.

Claims (27)

1. An optical spectroscopy system comprising:

a source of light providing a light signal having multiple wavelength components;

a dispersion member configured to receive the light signal from the source of light and disperse the light signal into wavelength components;

a wedge stack configured to filter out undesired wavelength components, and spatially position selected wavelength components; and

a detection member capable of receiving and detecting the spatially positioned selected wavelength components.

2. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 1 , wherein the dispersion member comprises a diffraction grating.

3. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 1 , wherein the dispersion member comprises a prism.

4. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 1 , wherein the wedge stack includes a plurality of optical wedges.

5. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 1 , wherein the optical spectroscopy system further comprises focusing optics that are configured to focus the light signal onto the detector member.

6. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 1 , further comprising collimating optics configured to collimate the light signal from the light source.

7. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 1 , wherein the detector member comprises a detector array.

8. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 7 , wherein the detector array is a two-dimensional array.

9. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 8 , wherein the two-dimensional array includes a plurality of detector elements, each detector element being positioned to sample an individual wavelength component.

10. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 4 , wherein at least one optical wedge acts as a high-pass filter.

11. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one optical wedge has a unique wavelength pass point.

12. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 4 , wherein at least one optical wedge acts as a band-pass filter.

13. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one optical wedge has a unique wavelength pass band.

14. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 4 , wherein at least one optical wedge includes a reflective layer having a reflective material that reflects at least one selected wavelength component at an angle.

15. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 14 , wherein the reflective material allows at least one undesired wavelength component to pass through the at least one optical wedge.

16. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 14 , wherein the reflective layer is disposed on a reflective surface of the at least one optical wedge.

17. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 16 , wherein the wedge stack includes a plurality of reflective surfaces, and each optical wedge is interconnected with another optical wedge so that the reflective surfaces are each oriented at distinct reflective angles with respect to one another.

18. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of optical wedges are stacked so that the magnitude of the reflected angle by each reflective surface increases from a smallest angle at a first optical wedge to a largest angle at a last optical wedge.

19. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 14 , wherein the wedge stack is configured to reflect the selected wavelength components into two-dimensionally separated wavelength components.

20. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 14 , wherein the wedge stack is configured to reflect at least one selected wavelength component back toward the dispersion member.

21. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 20 , wherein the dispersion member is configured to reflect the selected wavelength components into two-dimensionally separated wavelength components.

22. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 4 , wherein at least one optical wedge is formed of glass.

23. The optical spectroscopy system of claim 22 , wherein the glass comprises BK7 glass.
