Abstract

A method for distributed inventory management includes receiving information regarding a number of participants in a value chain and information regarding one or more items relevant in the value chain. The method also includes modeling relationships between two or more of the participants based on the received information and modeling the one or more items based on the received information. The method further includes receiving inventory data from the participants relating to the one or more items, evaluating the received inventory data according to one or more business rules associated with an agent, executing a business process associated with the agent based on the evaluation of the inventory data and the models of the relationships and the items, and communicating output of the business process to one or more of the participants.

Claims (81)

1. A distributed inventory management system, the system comprising one or more components collectively operable to:

receive information regarding a plurality of participants in a value chain, information regarding replenishment policies used in different tiers in the value chain, and information regarding one or more items relevant in the value chain;

model relationships between two or more of the participants based on the received information;

model the one or more items based on the received information; and

receive inventory data from the participants relating to the one or more items;

the system further comprising at least one software agent operable to:

evaluate the received inventory data according to one or more business rules associated with the agent;

execute a business process associated with the agent based on the evaluation of the inventory data and the models of the relationships and the items; and

communicate output of the business process to one or more of the participants,

wherein executing a business process comprises generating an alert when different replenishment policies are used in different tiers in the value chain.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule identifying maximum or minimum allowed levels of a particular inventory data measure.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule identifying a maximum time allowed for a fulfillment-related activity to occur.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule requiring a match between an ordered item and a delivered item.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

executing a business process comprises generating an alert based on the violation of a rule; and

communicating output of the business process comprises communicating the alert.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

executing a business process comprises initiating a business workflow at a planning or execution engine associated with the system; and

communicating output of the business process comprises communicating output of the engine.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the business workflow comprises a purchase order generation workflow in response to the violation of a rule specifying a minimum level of a particular inventory data measure.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein executing a business process comprises initiating a replenishment program.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein modeling the relationships between two or more of the participants comprises specifying the identity of one or more of the participants, the locations of the participants, the roles of the participants in the value chain, and one or more business rules associated with one or more of the participants.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein modeling the items comprises specifying the identity of one or more items relevant in the value chain, a description of the items, the locations at which each item is active, and an item hierarchy.

11. The system of claim 1 , further operable to:

communicate inventory data associated with a plurality of the participants to one or more planning or execution engines;

receive inventory planning or execution information from the engines; and

communicate the inventory planning or execution information to one or more of the participants.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein one or more of the engines comprise a replenishment planning engine, an order management system, a demand fulfillment engine, a supply chain planner, or a factory planner.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one software agent is further operable to evaluate the inventory planning or execution information.

14. A method for distributed inventory management, comprising:

receiving information regarding a plurality of participants in a value chain, information regarding replenishment policies used in different tiers in the value chain, and information regarding one or more items relevant in the value chain;

modeling relationships between two or more of the participants based on the received information;

modeling the one or more items based on the received information; and receiving inventory data from the participants relating to the one or more items;

evaluating the received inventory data according to one or more business rules associated with an agent;

executing a business process associated with the agent based on the evaluation of the inventory data and the models of the relationships and the items; and

communicating output of the business process to one or more of the participants,

wherein executing a business process comprises generating an alert when different replenishment policies are used in different tiers in the value chain.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule identifying maximum or minimum allowed levels of a particular inventory data measure.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule identifying a maximum time allowed for a fulfillment-related activity to occur.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule requiring a match between an ordered item and a delivered item.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein:

executing a business process comprises generating an alert based on the violation of a rule; and

communicating output of the business process comprises communicating the alert.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein:

executing a business process comprises initiating a business workflow at a planning or execution engine; and

communicating output of the business process comprises communicating output of the engine.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the business workflow comprises a purchase order generation workflow in response to the violation of a rule specifying a minimum level of a particular inventory data measure.

21. The method of claim 14 , wherein executing a business process comprises initiating a replenishment program.

The method of claim 14 , wherein modeling the relationships between two or more of the participants comprises specifying the identity of one or more of the participants, the locations of the participants, the roles of the participants in the value chain, and one or more business rules associated with one or more of the participants.

23. The method of claim 14 , wherein modeling the items comprises specifying the identity of one or more items relevant in the value chain, a description of the items, the locations at which each item is active, and an item hierarchy.

24. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

communicating inventory data associated with a plurality of the participants to one or more planning or execution engines;

receiving inventory planning or execution information from the engines; and

communicating the inventory planning or execution information to one or more of the participants.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein one or more of the engines comprise a replenishment planning engine, an order management system, a demand fulfillment engine, a supply chain planner, or a factory planner.

26. Software for distributed inventory management, the software embodied in a computer-readable medium and, when executed, operable to:

receive information regarding a plurality of participants in a value chain, information regarding replenishment policies used in different tiers in the value chain, and information regarding one or more items relevant in the value chain;

model relationships between two or more of the participants based on the received information;

model the one or more items based on the received information; and receiving inventory data from the participants relating to the one or more items;

evaluate the received inventory data according to one or more business rules associated with an agent;

execute a business process associated with the agent based on the evaluation of the inventory data and the models of the relationships and the items; and

communicate output of the business process to one or more of the participants,

wherein executing a business process comprises generating an alert when different replenishment policies are used in different tiers in the value chain.

27. The software of claim 26 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule identifying maximum or minimum allowed levels of a particular inventory data measure.

28. The software of claim 26 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule identifying a maximum time allowed for a fulfillment-related activity to occur.

29. The software of claim 26 , wherein the rules associated with the agent comprise a rule requiring a match between an ordered item and a delivered item.

30. The software of claim 26 , wherein:

executing a business process comprises generating an alert based on the violation of a rule; and

communicating output of the business process comprises communicating the alert.

31. The software of claim 26 , wherein:

executing a business process comprises initiating a business workflow at a planning or execution engine; and

communicating output of the business process comprises communicating output of the engine.

32. The software of claim 31 , wherein the business workflow comprises a purchase order generation workflow in response to the violation of a rule specifying a minimum level of a particular inventory data measure.

33. The software of claim 26 , wherein executing a business process comprises initiating a replenishment program.

The software of claim 26 , wherein modeling the relationships between two or more of the participants comprises specifying the identity of one or more of the participants, the locations of the participants, the roles of the participants in the value chain, and one or more business rules associated with one or more of the participants.

35. The software of claim 26 , wherein modeling the items comprises specifying the identity of one or more items relevant in the value chain, a description of the items, the locations at which each item is active, and an item hierarchy.

36. The software of claim 26 , further operable to:

communicate inventory data associated with a plurality of the participants to one or more planning or execution engines;

receive inventory planning or execution information from the engines; and

communicate the inventory planning or execution information to one or more of the participants.

37. The software of claim 36 , wherein one or more of the engines comprise a replenishment planning engine, an order management system, a demand fulfillment engine, a supply chain planner, or a factor planner.
