Abstract

A slider having leading and trailing edges is configured to fly on an airbearing adjacent a data storage disk rotating from the leading edge to the trailing edge. Read and write heads are mounted on the slider proximate the trailing edge. An auxiliary thermal sensor is mounted on the slider, but preferably nearer the leading edge. Forward placement of the sensor allows it to sense mechanical defects before they reach the heads, thereby permitting a write inhibit operation, for example. The sensor may also be used to detect airbearing modulation. Appropriate action may be taken when unacceptable airbearing modulation is detected, such as notifying the user and/or scrubbing the slider. The sensor is preferably wider than the heads. This allows, for example, an in-situ glide test to be performed faster using the sensor. An arm electronics module is preferably configured to permit concurrent operation of the sensor and heads.

Claims (50)

A method for look-ahead thermal sensing during writing in a data storage device, the data storage device having a slider with a leading edge and a trailing edge, the slider being configured to fly on an airbearing adjacent a data storage disk rotating from the leading edge to the trailing edge, comprising the steps of:

providing a read head, a write head and an auxiliary thermal sensor on the slider, the read and write heads being mounted on the slider proximate the trailing edge, and the auxiliary thermal sensor being mounted on the slider nearer the leading edge than are the read and write heads;

writing data to the data storage disk using the write head;

monitoring an output signal of the auxiliary thermal sensor to detect whether either a disk defect or slider airbearing modulation is present during the writing step.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

re-writing the data written in the writing step, if either a disk defect or slider airbearing modulation is detected during the monitoring step.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

selectively reading, using the read head, the data written in the writing step, if either a disk defect or slider airbearing modulation is detected during the monitoring step.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

stopping the writing step, if either a disk defect or slider airbearing modulation is detected during the monitoring step.

5. The method as recited in claim 4 , further comprising the step of:

re-writing, after the stopping step, the data written in the writing step.

6. A method for look-ahead thermal sensing during reading in a data slorage device, the data storage device having a slider with a leading edge and a trailing edge, the slider being configured to fly on an airbearing adjacent a data storage disk rotating from the leading edge to the trailing edge, comprising the steps of:

providing a read head and an auxiliary thermal sensor on the slider, the read head being mounted on the slider proximate the trailing edge, and the auxiliary thermal sensor being mounted on the slider nearer the leading edge than is the read head;

reading data from the data storage disk using the read head; and

monitoring an output signal of the auxiliary thermal sensor to detect whether either a disk defect or slider airbearing modulation is present during the reading step.

7. The method as recited in claim 6 , further comprising the step of:

re-reading the data read in the reading step, if either a disk defect or slider airbearing modulation is detected during the monitoring step.

8. The method as recited in claim 6 , further comprising the step of:

stopping the reading step, if either a disk defect or slider airbearing modulation is detected during the monitoring step.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 , further comprising the step of:

re-reading, after the stopping step, the data read in the reading step.

10. A glide testing method for thermally sensing disk defects in a data storage device, the data storage device having a slider configured to fly on an airbearing adjacent a rotating data storage disk, comprising the steps of:

providing a transducer and an auxiliary thermal sensor on the slider, the transducer including means for reading and writing data from and to the data storage disk; and

scanning at least a portion of a surface of the data storage disk using the auxiliary thermal sensor to detect whether mechanical defects are present.

11. The glide testing method as recited in claim 10 , wherein the auxiliary thermal senor is wider than the read means of the transducer in a track width direction.

12. The glide testing method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the auxiliary thermal sensor is at least about 30 times wider than the read means of the transducer.

13. A method of thermally sensing slider airbearing modulation in a data storage device, the data storage device having a slider configured to fly on an airbearing adjacent a rotating data storage disk, comprising the steps of:

providing a transducer and an auxiliary thermal sensor on the slider, the transducer including means for reading and writing data from and to the data storage disk;

monitoring an output signal of the auxiliary thermal sensor; and

analyzing the output signal of the auxiliary thermal sensor to detect whether slider airbearing modulation is present.

14. The method as recited in claim 13 , further comprising the step of:

attempting to dislodge debris from the slider, if slider airbearing modulation is detected during the analyzing step.

15. The method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the attempting step comprises the steps of:

unloading the slider from the data storage disk; and

loading the slider onto the data storage disk after the unloading step.

16. The method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the attempting step comprises the steps of:

stopping the data storage device; and

starting the data storage device after the stopping step.

17. The method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the attempting step comprises the steps of:

reducing the speed of rotation of the data storage disk; and

performing a seeking operation to move the transducer from a first track to a second track after the reducing step is commenced.

18. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the seeking operation is performed relatively slowly as compared to a normal seeking operation.
