Abstract

An image is printed on a substrate by means of a computer driven printer using heat activated dyes, without activating the dyes during the process of printing onto the substrate. The dyes are subsequently activated by applying sufficient heat and pressure to the substrate to activate the dyes.

Claims (32)

1. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer, comprising the steps of:

a) preparing a solid ink jet ink formulation comprising up to 30%, by weight, heat activated dye solids, 1% to 20%, by weight, at least one emulsifying enforcing agent, and 20% to 70%, by weight, at least one meltable transfer vehicle;

b) supplying a thermal ink jet printer with said solid ink jet ink formulation;

c) printing said solid ink jet ink formulation in a desired image on a substrate by means of said thermal jet printer onto a medium at a temperature which is below the temperature at which said heat activated dye solids activate, wherein said at least one meltable transfer vehicle is melted and liquefied during said printing; and

d) subsequent to printing said desired image on said substrate, activating said heat activated dye solids by the application of heat at a temperature which is above the temperature at which said heat activated dye solids activate, so as to cause said heat activated dye solids to bond to said substrate.

2. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 1 , further comprising the step of finely dividing said heat activated dye solids prior to performing the step of preparing said solid ink jet formulation.

3. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 1 , wherein said at least one meltable transfer vehicle is a wax.

4. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 1 , wherein said heat activated dye solids are sublimation dyes.

5. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer, comprising the steps of:

a) preparing an ink formulation, said ink formulation comprising heat activated dye solids, at least one emulsifying enforcing agent for shielding the heat activated dye solids and at least one meltable transfer material;

b) supplying an ink jet printer with said ink formulation;

c) printing said ink formulation by means of said ink jet printer to form an image on a substrate, wherein said printing occurs at a temperature which is below the material activation temperature of said heat activated dye solids, wherein a portion of said at least one meltable transfer material is melted during printing, and wherein said emulsifying enforcing agent emulsifies said heat activated dye solids within the at least one meltable transfer material; and

d) subsequent to printing said image on said substrate, activating said heat activated dye solids by the application of heat at a temperature which is above the temperature at which said heat activated dye solids activate, so as to cause said heat activated dye solids to bond to said substrate.

6. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 5 , further comprising the step of finely dividing said heat activated dye solids prior to performing the step of preparing said ink jet formulation.

7. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 5 , wherein said at least one meltable transfer vehicle is a wax.

8. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 5 , wherein said heat activated dye solids are sublimation dyes.

9. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer, comprising the steps of:

a) preparing a solid ink jet ink formulation comprising up to 30%, by weight, heat activated dye solids, and 20% to 70%, by weight, at least one meltable transfer vehicle;

b) supplying a thermal ink jet printer with said solid ink jet ink formulation;

c) printing said solid ink jet ink formulation in a desired image on a substrate by means of said thermal jet printer onto a medium at a temperature which is below the temperature at which said heat activated dye solids activate, wherein said at least one meltable transfer vehicle is melted and liquefied during said printing; and

d) subsequent to printing said desired image on said substrate, activating said heat activated dye solids by the application of heat at a temperature which is above the temperature at which said heat activated dye solids activate, so as to cause said heat activated dye solids to bond to said substrate.

10. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 9 , further comprising the step of finely dividing said heat activated dye solids prior to performing the step of preparing said solid ink jet formulation.

11. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 9 , wherein said at least one meltable transfer vehicle is a wax.

12. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer using heat activated dye solids as described in claim 9 , wherein said heat activated dye solids are sublimation dyes.

13. A method of printing a design by means of an ink jet printer, comprising the steps of:

a) preparing an ink formulation, said ink formulation comprising heat activated dye solids and at least one meltable transfer material;

b) supplying an ink jet printer with said ink formulation;

c) printing said ink formulation by means of said ink jet printer to form an image on a substrate, wherein said printing occurs at a temperature which is below the material activation temperature of said heat activated dye solids, wherein a portion of said at least one meltable transfer material is melted during printing; and
