Abstract

An apparatus for transmural ablation using an instrument containing two electrodes. The electrodes extend along the surfaces of mating jaw members which are moveable between open and clamped positions. The electrodes are connected to an RF energy source so that, when activated, they are of opposite polarity. An EKG sensor is located on one of the jaw members and spaced from the electrode so that, when the electrodes are activated to form a line of ablation, the EKG sensor contacts the tissue outside the line of ablation. A pacing electrode is located on one of the jaw members so as to be on the opposite side of the line of ablation from the EKG sensor. Thus, if the line of ablation is not transmural, the EKG sensor will be able to detect signals generated by the pacing electrode.

Claims (32)

1. A device for clamping and ablating tissue comprising:

first and second jaw members being movable between a first open position and a second clamped position;

a first ablation member having first and second ends and carried by the first jaw member;

a second ablation member having first and second ends and carried by the second jaw member; and

an EKG sensor located on at least one of the first and second jaw members intermediate the first and second ends of the ablation member and spaced from the ablation member so that when the ablation members are activated to create a line of ablation in the tissue, the EKG sensor contacts the tissue outside the line of ablation defined along the ablation members.

The device of claim 1 further comprising a pacing electrode located on at least one of the first and second jaw members intermediate the first and second ends of the ablation member and on the opposite side of the line of ablation from the EKG sensor, so that if the ablation is not complete the EKG sensor can detect signals generated by the pacing electrode.

3. The device of claim 2 wherein the EKG sensor and the pacing electrode are located on the same jaw member.

4. A tissue grasping apparatus comprising:

first and second grasping jaws, the grasping jaws being relatively moveable between open and closed positions; at least one jaw including an ablation member; and

at least one EKG sensor located on at least one of the first and second jaws and spaced from the ablation member so that when the ablation member is activated to create a line of ablation in the tissue, the EKG sensor contacts the tissue outside the line of ablation defined along the ablation member.

A The apparatus of claim 4 further comprising a pacing electrode located on the one of the first and second jaws intermediate the first and second ends of the ablation member and on the opposite side of the line of ablation from the EKG sensor, so that if the ablation is not complete the EKG sensor can detect signals generated by the pacing electrode.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the EKG sensor and the pacing electrode are located on the same jaw.

7. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the EKG sensor and the ablation member are located on the same jaw.

8. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein each jaw includes an ablation member.

9. A tissue grasping apparatus comprising:

first and second grasping jaws, the grasping jaws being relatively moveable between open and closed positions; at least one jaw including an ablation member;

at least one EKG sensor located on at least one of the first and second jaws and spaced from the ablation member so that when the ablation member is activated to create a line ablation in the tissue, the EKG sensor contacts the tissue outside the line of the ablation defined along the ablation member; and

at least one pacing electrode located on at least one of the first and second jaws and spaced from the ablation member so that when the ablation member is activated to create a line of ablation in the tissue, the pacing electrode contacts the tissue outside the line of ablation defined along the ablation member on the opposite side of the line of ablation from the EKG sensor.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the EKG sensor and the pacing electrode are located on the same jaw.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the EKG sensor and the ablation member are located on the same jaw.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the pacing electrode and the ablation member are located on the same jaw.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein each jaw includes an ablation member.

14. A tissue grasping apparatus comprising:

first and second grasping jaws, the grasping jaws being relatively moveable between open and closed positions; at least one jaw including an ablation member; and

at least one pacing electrode located on at least one of the first and second jaws and spaced from the ablation member so that when the ablation member is activated to create a line of ablation in the tissue, the pacing electrode contacts the tissue outside the line of ablation defined along the ablation member.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 further comprising

an EKG sensor located on at least one of the first and second jaws and spaced from the ablation member so that when the ablation member is activated to create a line ablation in the tissue, the EKG sensor contacts the tissue outside the line of the ablation defined along the ablation member on the opposite side of the line of ablation from the pacing electrode.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the EKG sensor and the pacing electrode are located on the same jaw.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the EKG sensor and the ablation member are located on the same jaw.

18. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the pacing electrode and the ablation member are located on the same jaw.

19. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein a pair of EKG sensors are located on at least one of the first and second jaws.

20. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein a pair of pacing electrodes are located on at least one of the first and second jaws.
