Abstract

A tool for performing anastomosis connects two tissue structures end-to-end. A clamp holds each tissue structure. The clamps are movable relative to one another, and are registered together such that the flaps of one tissue structure are pressed against the corresponding flaps of the other tissue structure when the clamps come together. Each flap of one tissue structure is connected to a corresponding flap on the other corresponding tissue structure with at least one connector.

Claims (25)

1. A system for performing anastomosis between tissue structures, comprising:

at least two clamps moveable relative to one another, wherein at least one said clamp comprises a first arm and a second arm moveably connected to one another; further comprising a catch extending from said first arm and a corresponding aperture defined in said second arm; wherein said catch is configured to engage said aperture to prevent said first and second arms from separating in use after said clamp is closed;

a plurality of connectors detachably connected to at least one said clamp; and

at least one actuator movable along a channel in at least one said arm to deploy, said connectors.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein said actuator is movable to deploy said connectors sequentially.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein said actuator is movable to deploy at least two said connectors substantially simultaneously.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one said clamp further comprises a connector deployer corresponding to each said connector.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein at least one said connector deployer comprises at least one track, wherein said at least one track is configured to receive one of said connectors.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein at least one said connector is at least partially coated with sodium stearate.

7. The system of claim 4 , wherein at least one said clamp comprises a first channel defined therein, said actuator configured to translate at least partially through said channel, wherein at least one said connector deployer intersects said first channel.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein at least one said connector extends at least partially into said first channel before deployment.

9. The system of claim 4 , further comprising at least one anvil connected to at least one said clamp.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a plurality of depressions on said anvil, said depressions corresponding to said connector deployers.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least two of said connectors initially are detachably connected to one another.

12. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second channel defined in said second arm, wherein said actuator further comprises a keel movable at least partially within said second channel.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein said actuator is moveable distally, and wherein said keel is configured to urge said catch out of engagement with said aperture when said actuator has moved a predetermined amount.

14. A system for performing anastomosis between tissue structures, comprising:

a handle;

at least two clamps connected to said handle and moveable relative to one another, wherein at least one said clamp is detachable from said handle; and wherein at least one said clamp comprises a first arm and a second arm moveably connected to one another; further comprising a catch extending from said first arm; and a corresponding aperture defined in said second arm, wherein said catch is configured to engage said aperture to prevent said first and second arms from separating in use after said clamp is closed;

a plurality of connectors detachably connected to at least one said clamp; and

at least one actuator movable along a channel in at least one said arm.

15. A system for performing anastomosis between tissue structures, comprising:

at least two clamps moveable relative to one another;

a plurality of connectors detachably connected to at least one said clamp; wherein at least one said connector is at least partially coated with sodium stearate; and

at least one actuator slidable along a channel in at least one said clamp to deploy at least one said connector.
