Abstract

An optical transceiver for detecting an incoming light beam and for transmitting an outgoing light beam along a common optical axis is provided. Such an optical transceiver provides a compact optical transceiver that is suitable for a wide variety of applications.

Claims (12)

1. An optical transceiver comprising:

an optical detector whose input comprises a first light beam, the first light beam including at least a first wavelength, the optical detector comprising a plurality of photodiodes stacked one on top of another and connected to each other in series;

an optical transmitter connected in series with two of the photodiodes, the optical transmitter having an output that comprises a second light beam, the second light beam including at least a second wavelength that is different from the first wavelength, the optical detector comprising one or more materials that are optically unresponsive with respect to at least a portion of the second light beam so that an optical signal path for the second light beam is defined that extends from the optical transmitter through the optical detector, and the optical detector and the optical transmitter being stacked one on top of the other and arranged so that the first light beam and second light beam are received and transmitted, respectively, through a top of the optical transceiver, the optical transmitter receiving power either directly or indirectly from two of the photodiodes;

a substrate stacked together with the optical detector and optical transmitter such that the optical transmitter is stacked between the substrate and the optical detector;

a contact positioned on the substrate such that the substrate is located between the contact and the optical transmitter; and

a field effect transistor (FET) connected in series with two of the photo diodes and the optical transmitter such that a drain and source of the FET are connected in series with two of the photodiodes and the optical transmitter.

2. An optical transceiver according to claim 1 wherein the optical transmitter is a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitter Laser (VCSEL).

3. An optical transceiver according to claim 1 wherein a gate of the FET is controlled either directly or indirectly by a sensor.

4. An optical transceiver according to claim 1 wherein two or more photo diodes are connected in series by diode connections.

5. An optical transceiver according to claim 4 wherein selected diode connections include a tunnel junction that has two highly but oppositely doped adjacent layers.

6. An optical transceiver according to claim 1 wherein the optical transmitter comprises a laser.

7. An optical transceiver according to claim 1 wherein the first wavelength comprises an absorption cutoff wavelength that is shorter than the second wavelength.
