Abstract

Apparatus for applying traction to an elongate cylindrical element produced by fusion of an end portion of a preform of glass material, in which a traction device is capable of being connected to a portion of the elongate cylindrical element to provide traction of the elongate cylindrical element along an axis. A device for the rotation of the elongate cylindrical element applies a twist to the elongate cylindrical element about the axis simultaneously with the traction.

Claims (7)

1. A method of applying traction to an unclad elongate cylindrical element produced by the fusion of a core preform of glass material to improve straightness and concentricity of the core preform, said cylindrical element being usable in a process of producing an optical fibre, comprising:

a) providing, prior to application of a cladding, traction of the unclad elongate cylindrical element along an axis of advance, said providing traction comprising contacting at least a first and a second traction pulley to said unclad elongate cylindrical element and causing said first and second traction pulleys to rotate about respective axes, said traction pulleys being in a common plane and movable between a rest position in which the first and second pulleys are positioned away from each other and not in contact with the elongate element and an activation position in which the first and second pulleys approach each other and are in contact with the elongate element; and

b) imparting, prior to application of a cladding, a twist to the unclad elongate cylindrical element about said axis of advance.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein step a) providing traction and step b) imparting a twist are carried out simultaneously.

3. A method according to claim 2 , wherein step b) imparting a twist comprises the steps of coupling a rotatable body to said elongate cylindrical element and providing a motion of rotation of said rotatable body about said axis of advance.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein step b) imparting a twist comprises the step of rotating said plane in which the pulleys lie about said axis of advance.

5. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising heating an end portion of a core preform of glass material in such a way as to obtain fused glass material; said unclad elongate cylindrical element being formed from said fused glass material.
