Abstract

A computer system (for example a blade server system) includes a connection framework for receiving at least two replaceable units (e.g., service processor units). Where a first replaceable unit is provided in the connection framework, the first replaceable unit can, on a second replaceable unit being received in the framework, allow restricted use of a default admin user login without a password for up to the end of predetermined period following receipt of the second replaceable unit. On receipt of an admin login with a configured password during the period, or on expiry of the period, the system can revert to normal operation.

Claims (38)

1. A computer system comprising:

a connection framework configured to receive at least two replaceable units;

a first replaceable unit received in the connection framework;

wherein, in response to the connection framework receiving a second replaceable unit, the first replaceable unit is configured to allow restricted use of a default admin user login without a password for up to the end of a predetermined period following receipt of the second replaceable unit;

wherein the connection framework forms a carrier for the replaceable units;

wherein the carrier is a rack mountable shelf; and

wherein the computer system is a high density server system comprising a plurality of blade servers removably receivable in the rack mountable shelf.

2. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the first replaceable unit is configured, during the predetermined period, to respond to receipt of an admin login with a configured password by reverting to normal operation.

3. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the first replaceable unit is configured, on receipt of the second replaceable unit, to set a flag to allow restricted use of the default admin user login without a password for up to the end of the predetermined period.

4. The computer system of claim 3 , wherein the first replaceable unit is configured, during the predetermined period, to respond to receipt of an admin login with a configured password by resetting the flag and reverting to normal operation.

5. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the first replaceable unit is configured to allow restricted use of the default admin user login without a password via a predetermined connection.

6. The computer system of claim 5 , wherein the predetermined connection is a management connection.

7. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the first replaceable unit is configured to retain configured admin user passwords when the second replaceable unit is received in the connection framework.

8. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the first replaceable unit is configured, during the predetermined period, to reset an admin user to a shipping state in response to allowing restricted use of the default admin user login without a password.

9. The computer system of claim 8 , wherein the first replaceable unit is configured, during the predetermined period, to entry of a password following the allowed restricted use of the default admin user login without a password, to replace a previously configured password and to reset the permissions of the admin user.

10. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the first replaceable unit is configured to revert to normal operation at the end of the predetermined period following receipt of the second replaceable unit.

11. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the first replaceable unit includes a timer configured to time the predetermined period following receipt of the second replaceable unit.

12. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second removable units is a field replaceable service processor module.

13. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second removable units is a combined switch and service processor module.

14. A method of operating a computer system including a connection framework for receiving at least two replaceable units, the method comprising:

mounting a first replaceable unit in the connection framework, wherein the first replaceable unit is configured as a master;

mounting a second replaceable unit in the connection framework; and

allowing restricted use of a default admin user login without a password for up to the end of a predetermined period following receipt of the second replaceable unit;

wherein the connection framework forms a carrier for the replaceable units;

wherein the carrier is a rack mountable shelf; and

wherein the computer system is a high density server system comprising a plurality of blade servers removably receivable in the rack mountable shelf.

15. The method of claim 14 , comprising responding to receipt, during the predetermined period, of an admin login with a configured password by reverting to normal operation.

16. The method of claim 14 , comprising, on receipt of the second replaceable unit, setting a flag to allow restricted use of the default admin user login without a password for up to the end of the predetermined period.

17. The method of claim 16 , comprising responding to receipt, during the predetermined period, of an admin login with a configured password by resetting the flag and reverting to normal operation.

18. The method of claim 14 , comprising allowing the restricted use of the default admin user login without a password via a predetermined connection.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the predetermined connection is a management connection.

20. The method of claim 14 , comprising retaining configured admin user passwords when the second replaceable unit is received in the connection framework.

21. The method of claim 14 , comprising, during the predetermined period, resetting an admin user to a shipping state in response to allowing restricted use of the default admin user login without a password.

22. The method of claim 21 , comprising responding to entry of a password during the predetermined period and following the allowed restricted use of the default admin user login without a password, by replacing a previously configured password and resetting the permissions of the admin user.

23. The method of claim 14 , comprising reverting to normal operation at the end of the predetermined period following receipt of the second replaceable unit.

24. The method of claim 14 , comprising setting a timer configured to time the predetermined period following receipt of the second replaceable unit.

25. The method of claim 14 , wherein each of the first and second removable units is a field replaceable service processor module.

26. The method of claim 14 , wherein each of the first and second removable units is a combined switch and service processor module.
