Abstract

A golf ball with a precise spin rate is disclosed. The distribution of weight among the layers within the golf ball relative to a centroid radius is realized to precisely control the moment of inertia of the ball. In accordance to one aspect of the present invention, a high spin rate golf ball with a dense center, which is positioned radially inside of the centroid radius, and a low specific gravity mantle is provided. In accordance to another aspect of the present invention, a low spin rate golf ball with an inner core and a thin dense layer disposed radially outside of the centroid radius is provided.

Claims (11)

1. A golf ball comprising a thin dense layer encasing a core, wherein the thin dense layer is encased by a cover, wherein the thin dense layer has an inner diameter of at least 38.4 mm and has a specific gravity of greater than 2.0 and a thickness from 0.025 mm to 1.27 mm, and the thin dense layer is positioned at a radial distance outside of centroid radius of the golf ball and is made from a densified loaded film.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thin dense layer is positioned at a distance ranging from 0.76mm to 2.8 mm from a land surface of the ball.

3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thickness of the thin dense layer is from 0.127 mm to 0.76 mm.

4. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core is comprised of an inner core including a liquid.

5. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core is comprised of a hollow inner core.

6. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core is comprised of an inner core including a foamed layer.

7. A golf ball comprising a thin dense layer encasing a core, wherein the thin dense layer is encased by a cover, wberein the thin dense layer has an inner diameter of at least 38.4 mm, has a specific gravity of greater than 2.0, has a thickness from 0.125 mm to 0.76mm and is positioned at a radial distance outside of a centroid radius of the golf ball, wherein the presence of the thin dense layer does not appreciably affect ball compression, coefficient of restitution and cover hardness.

8. The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the thin dense layer is made from a densified loaded film.

9. The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the thin dense layer is made from a material selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes, epoxies, polyesters, silicones and rubber latex.

10. The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the thin dense layer is made from a thermoplastic polymer loaded with a specific gravity increasing agent.

11. The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the core is a non-wound core having a specific gravity of less than the specific gravity of the thin dense layer, a diameter from 35 mm to 42 mm and a compression of less than 90.
