Abstract

Automated personal video recording on a personal video recorder, including recording shows, each show having an original compression level; further compressing a recorded show to a new compression level, the new compression level being higher than the recorded show's original compression level, thereby making available free space; and recording at least part of a new show in free space made available by further compressing the recorded show. Embodiments include recording a show having a compression level and increasing the show's compression level while recording.

Claims (34)

1. A method for automated personal video recording, the method comprising the steps of:

recording shows, each show having an original compression level;

further compressing a recorded show to a new compression level, the new compression level being higher than the recorded show's original compression level, making available free space;

recording at least part of a new show in free space made available by further compressing the recorded show, wherein the new show's storage space requirement exceeds an amount of free space available for recording the new show by a deficit amount; and

borrowing a loan amount, the loan amount being less than the deficit amount.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising selecting the recorded show.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein selecting the recorded show comprises selecting a show having an original compression level lower than a highest supported compression level in a personal video recorder.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the recorded show comprises an original video file and further compressing the recorded show comprises calling software routines in an API for a codec.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the recorded show comprises an original video file having original encoding parameters including an original encoding type, and further compressing the recorded show comprises:

converting the original video file into a new video file having new encoding parameters optionally including a new encoding type; and

deleting the original video file.

6. A personal video recorder (“PVR”) comprising:

means for recording shows, each show having an original compression level;

means for further compressing a recorded show to a new compression level, the new compression level being higher than the recorded show's original compression level, making available free space;

means for recording at least part of a new show in free space made available by further compressing the recorded show, wherein the new show's storage space requirement exceeds an amount of free space available for recording the new show by a deficit amount; and

means for borrowing a loan amount, the loan amount being less than the deficit amount.

7. The PVR of claim 6 further comprising means for selecting the recorded show.

8. The PVR of claim 7 wherein means for selecting the recorded show comprises means for selecting a show having an original compression level lower than a highest supported compression level in the PVR.

9. The PVR of claim 6 wherein the recorded show comprises an original video file and means for further compressing the recorded show comprises means for calling software routines in an API for a codec.

10. The PVR of claim 9 wherein the recorded show comprises an original video file having original encoding parameters including an original encoding type, and means for further compressing the recorded show comprises:

means for converting the original video file into a new video file having new encoding parameters optionally including a new encoding type; and

means for deleting the original video file.

11. A computer program product for automated personal video recording, the computer program product comprising:

a recording medium;

means, recorded on the recording medium, for recording shows, each show having an original compression level;

means, recorded on the recording medium, for further compressing a recorded show to a new compression level, the new compression level being higher than the recorded show's original compression level, making available free space;

means, recorded on the recording medium, for recording at least part of a new show in free space made available by further compressing the recorded show, wherein the new show's storage space requirement exceeds an amount of free space available for recording the new show by a deficit amount; and

means, recorded on the recording medium, for borrowing a loan amount, the loan amount being less than the deficit amount.

12. The computer program product of claim 11 further comprising means, recorded on the recording medium, for selecting the recorded show.

13. The computer program product of claim 12 wherein means, recorded on the recording medium, for selecting the recorded show comprises means, recorded on the recording medium, for selecting a show having an original compression level lower than a highest supported compression level in a personal video recorder.

14. The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the recorded show comprises an original video file and means, recorded on the recording medium, for further compressing the recorded show comprises means, recorded on the recording medium, for calling software routines in an API for a codec.

15. The computer program product of claim 14 wherein the recorded show comprises an original video file having original encoding parameters including an original encoding type, and means, recorded on the recording medium, for further compressing the recorded show comprises:

means, recorded on the recording medium, for converting the original video file into a new video file having new encoding parameters optionally including a new encoding type; and

means, recorded on the recording medium, for deleting the original video file.
