Abstract

A method of treating a heart may include providing an implant having a first end and a second end, placing the implant in a heart wall between a heart chamber and a blood vessel such that the first end of the implant is in flow communication with at least one of the geart chamber and the blood vessel, and delivering an angiogenesis factor in a time-relaease mannor to the heart wall proximate the implant.

Claims (80)

1. A method of treating a heart, the method comprising:

providing an implant having a first end and a second end;

placing the implant in a heart wall between a heart chamber and a blood vessel such that the first end of the implant is in flow communication with at least one of the heart chamber and the blood vessel;

delivering n angiogenesis factor in a time-release manner to the heart wall proximate the implant; and

controlling the rate of the delivery of the angiogenesis factor,

wherein the implant is porous and controlling the rate of the delivery includes controlling a porosity of the implant.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor includes delivering the angiogenesis factor via the implant.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the implant is configured to carry the angiogenesis factor.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant includes a stent.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant includes a plug.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the first end of the implant in flow communication with the heart chamber and placing the second end of the implant in flow communication with the blood vessel.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor in the time-release manner includes permitting the implant to degrade over time.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor in the time-release manner includes permitting the implant to be absorbed by the heart wall over time.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor in the time-release manner includes permitting the implant to dissolve over time.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising delivering at least one additional agent to the heart wall proximate the implant.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor and the at least one additional agent includes delivering the angiogenesis factor and the at least one additional agent via an implant having the angiogenesis factor and the at least one additional agent applied thereto.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising controlling the rate of delivery of each of the angiogenesis factor and the at least one additional agent.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the first end of the implant in flow communication with a left ventricle.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the first end of the implant in flow communication with a coronary artery.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the second end of the implant within the heart wall.

16. A method of treating a heart, the method comprising:

providing an implant having a first end and a second end;

placing th implant in a heart wall between a heart chamber and a blood vessel such that the first end of the implant is in flow communication with at least one of the heart chamber and the blood vessel;

delivering an agent in a time-release manner to the heart wall proximate the implant; and

controlling the rate of the delivery of the agent,

wherein th implant is coated with a layer including the agents,

wherein th implant is porous and controlling the rate of the delivery includes controlling a porosity of the implant.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising delivering at least one additional agent to the heart wall proximate the implant.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein delivering the agents includes delivering the agents via an implant having multiple agents applied thereto.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising controlling the rate of delivery of each of the agents.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the implant includes a stent.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the implant includes a plug.

22. The method of claim 16 , wherein the agent is chosen from angiogenesis factors, nucleic acid instructions for angiogenesis factors, growth factors, genes, drugs, and pharmaceutical compounds.

23. The method of claim 16 , wherein the layer is made of a polymeric material.

24. The method of claim 16 , wherein placing the implant includes placing he first end of the implant in flow communication with the heart chamber and placing the second end of the implant in flow communication with the blood vessel.

25. The method of claim 16 , wherein delivering the agent in the time-release manner includes permitting the implant to degrade over time.

26. The method of claim 16 , wherein delivering the agent in the time-release manner includes permitting the implant to be absorbed by the heart wall over time.

27. The method of claim 16 , wherein delivering the agent in the time-release manner includes permitting the implant to dissolve over time.

28. The method of claim 16 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the first end of the implant in flow communication with a left ventricle.

29. The method of claim 16 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the first end of the implant in flow communication with a coronary artery.

30. The method of claim 16 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the second end of the implant within the heart wall.

31. The method of claim 16 , wherein the agent is a biologically active agent.

32. A method of treating a heart, the method comprising:

providing an implant having a first end and a second end;

placing th implant in a heart wall such that the first end of the implant is in flow communication with a heart chamber and the second end of the implant is in flow communication with a blood vessel;

delivering an angiogenesis factor to the heart wall proximate the implant, and

controlling the rate of the delivery of the angiogenesis factor,

wherein the implant is porous and controlling the rate of the delivery includes controlling a porosity of the implant.

33. The method of claim 32 , further comprising delivering at least one additional agent to the heart wall proximate the implant.

34. The method of claim 33 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor and the at least one additional agent includes delivering the angiogenesis factor and the at least one additional agent via an implant having the angiogenesis factor and the at least one additional agent applied thereto.

35. The method of claim 34 , further comprising controlling the rate of delivery of each of the angiogenesis factor and the at least one additional agent.

36. The method of claim 32 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor includes delivering the angiogenesis factor via the implant.

37. The method of claim 36 , wherein the implant is configured to car the angiogenesis factor.

38. The method of claim 32 , wherein the implant includes a stent.

39. The method of claim 32 , wherein the implant includes a plug.

40. The method of claim 32 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the first end of the implant in flow communication with a left ventricle.

41. The method of claim 32 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the second end of the implant in flow communication with a coronary artery.

42. The method of claim 32 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor includes permitting the implant to degrade over time.

43. The method of claim 32 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor includes permitting the implant to be absorbed by the heart wall over time.

44. The method of claim 32 , wherein delivering the angiogenesis factor includes permitting the implant to dissolve over time.

45. A method of treating a heart, the method comprising:

providing an implant having a first end and a second end;

placing the implant in a heart wall such that the first end of the implant is in flow communication with a heart chamber and the second end of the implant is in flow communication with a blood vessel;

delivering an agent to the heart wall proximate the implant; and

controlling the rate of the delivery of the agent,

wherein the implant is coated with a layer including the agent,

wherein the implant is porous and controlling the rate of the delivery includes controlling a porosity of the implant.

46. The method of claim 45 , further comprising delivering at least one additional agent to the heart wall proximate the implant.

47. The method of claim 46 , wherein delivering the agents includes delivering the agents via an implant having multiple agents applied thereto.

48. The method of claim 47 , further comprising controlling the rate of delivery of each of the agents.

49. The method of claim 45 , wherein the implant includes a stent.

50. The method of claim 45 , wherein the implant includes a plug.

51. The method of claim 45 , wherein the agent is chosen from angiogenesis factors, nucleic acid instructions for angiogenesis factors, growth factors, genes, drugs, and pharmaceutical compounds.

52. The method of claim 45 , wherein the layer is made of a polymeric material.

53. The method of claim 45 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the first end of the implant in flow communication with a left ventricle.

54. The method of claim 45 , wherein placing the implant includes placing the second end of the implant in flow communication with a coronary artery.

55. The method of claim 45 , wherein delivering the agent includes permitting the implant to degrade over time.

56. The method of claim 45 , wherein delivering the agent includes permitting the implant to be absorbed by the heart wall over time.

57. The method of claim 45 , wherein delivering the agent includes permitting the implant to dissolve over time.

58. The method of claim 45 , wherein the agent is a biologically active agent.
