Abstract

A light guiding plate may have a light reflection face with at least one brightness enhancement recess that allows light having the optical distribution of a planar light source to be supplied toward the LCD panel. A brightness concentration recess may be formed in the light output face to concentrate the brightness. The brightness enhancement recess may include light diffusion recesses. The light guiding plate can obviate the use of a diffusion sheet, a prism sheet, or a reflection plate from a backlight assembly.

Claims (35)

1. A light guiding plate disposed below a liquid crystal display panel, for allowing a light having an optical distribution of a planar light source to be supplied toward the liquid crystal display panel, said light guiding plate comprising:

a light input face into which the light is inputted;

a light reflection face that is adjacent to said light input face, said light 6 reflection face having at least one brightness enhancement recess; and

a light output face facing said light reflection face,

wherein said brightness enhancement recess is formed at said light reflection face of a body of the light guiding plate, the body of the light guiding plate including at least two side faces having said light input face,

wherein said brightness enhancement recess reflects toward said light output face a light that is inputted through said light input face and is reflected by said side faces, to enhance brightness, and

wherein said light reflection face comprises at least one brightness enhancement protrusion formed at a surface thereof, said brightness enhancement protrusion reflecting a light leaked through said light reflection face toward said light output face to reproduce the leaked light.

2. The light guiding plate of claim 1 , wherein a density of said brightness enhancement recess increases as it goes from a light input side face to an opposite side face when said density is measured from said light reflection face.

3. The light guiding plate of claim 1 , wherein said light diffusion recess has a size corresponding to 15–20% of said brightness enhancement recess.

4. The light guiding plate of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of brightness enhancement recesses, wherein the at least one brightness enhancement protrusion lies between a pair of the brightness enhancement recesses.

5. The light guiding plate of claim 1 , wherein a peak portion of the brightness enhancement protrusion is processed to have a rounded shape.

6. The light guiding plate of claim 1 , further comprising a light reproduction thin film below the light reflection face, wherein the light reproduction thin film comprises a highly reflective material.

7. The light guiding plate of claim 1 , wherein said brightness enhancement recess has a polygonal pyramid shape having at least three side faces.

8. The light guiding plate of claim 7 , wherein said side faces of said brightness enhancement recess are curved such that the light is diffused while the light is reflected.

9. The light guiding plate of claim 1 , wherein said brightness enhancement recess comprises at least one light diffusion recess formed at a side face of said brightness enhancement recess having a predetermined depth.

10. The light guiding plate of claim 9 , wherein the brightness enhancement recess comprises a plurality of light diffusion recesses that are spaced apart from each other.

11. A light guiding plate disposed below a liquid crystal display panel, for allowing a light having an optical distribution of a planar light source to be supplied toward the liquid crystal display panel, said light guiding plate comprising:

a light input face into which the light is inputted;

a light reflection face that is adjacent to said light input face;

a light output face facing said light reflection face; and

a light concentration guiding plate including a first auxiliary light concentration pattern, and a second auxiliary light concentration pattern, wherein said first auxiliary light concentration pattern is formed at a bottom face of said light concentration light guiding plate in the first direction and fitted with said light concentration pattern of the light guiding plate,

wherein said second auxiliary light concentration pattern is formed at an upper face of said light concentration light guiding plate in a second direction different from the first direction of said first auxiliary light concentration pattern in succession,

wherein said light output face includes at least one light concentration pattern formed in succession in a first direction, said light concentration pattern having a profile in a prism shape, wherein said reflection face comprises at least one brightness enhancement recess comprising at least one light diffusion recess formed at a side of said brightness enhancement recess.

12. The light guiding plate of claim 11 , wherein said light concentration pattern of the light guiding plate is spaced apart from said first auxiliary light concentration pattern.

13. The light guiding plate of claim 11 , wherein the brightness enhancement recess comprises a plurality of light diffusion recesses that are spaced apart from each other.

14. A light guiding plate disposed below a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel, for allowing a light having an optical distribution of a planar light source to be supplied toward the LCD panel, comprising:

a body comprising:

a light input face into which the light is introduced and which is located on at least two sides of the body;

a light reflection face adjacent to the light input face and having at least one brightness enhancement recess formed thereon; and

a light output face facing the light reflection face,

wherein the brightness enhancement recess reflects light from the light input face generally toward the light output face, and

wherein the brightness enhancement recess comprises a pyramidal shape, each side of the pyramid having a curved, triangular shape.

15. The light guiding plate of claim 14 , wherein the brightness enhancement recess comprises at least one light diffusion recess formed at a side face of the brightness enhancement recess having a predetermined depth, and the light diffusion recess has a size corresponding to about 15 to about 20% of the brightness enhancement recess.

16. The light guiding plate of claim 14 , wherein the brightness enhancement recess comprises a plurality of light diffusion recesses formed at a side face of the brightness enhancement recess having a predetermined depth, and the light diffusion recesses are spaced apart from each other.

17. The light guiding plate of claim 14 , wherein the light reflection face comprises at least one brightness enhancement protrusion formed at a surface thereof, and the brightness enhancement protrusion reflects light leaking through the light reflection face toward the light output face to recover the leaking light.
