Abstract

Apparatus and methods provide remote access to subscriber identity information and subscriber configuration information stored on one or more subscriber identity modules (SIMs), to allow remote configuration of wireless communications devices. A SIM server provides access to the SIMs, a SIM librarian catalogs the SIMs, and a SIM accounting system tracks and/bills for SIM usage. Apparatus and methods provide remote access to proxy wireless communications devices, allowing such devices to operate as if actually present in the remote locations.

Claims (25)

1. A system to remotely operate wireless communications devices, the system comprising:

a first subscriber identity module bank having a number of positions for receiving a number of subscriber identity modules;

a first subscriber identity module server associated with the first subscriber identity module bank and responsive to requests to provide subscriber identity information from the subscriber identity modules, if any, received at the positions of the associated subscriber identity module bank; and

a controller having a processor programmed to remotely control operation of a number of remote wireless communications clients at respective remote locations with respect to the controller, by transmitting commands over a communications channel to a network port residing in the remote wireless communications clients, the communications channel established over a communications network coupled to the network port, where the communications network is distinct from a cellular communications network employed by a respective wireless communications device of the wireless communications clients for communications, and where at least one of the commands includes a subscriber identity module identifier.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the subscriber identity module identifier is a human-recognizable name.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the subscriber identity module identifier is a human-recognizable name and wherein the subscriber identity module server comprises:

a processor; and

at least one computer-readable media storing instructions for causing the processor to determine a routable address for a subscriber identity module from the subscriber identity module identifier.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a subscriber identity module librarian having a data structure that defines a set of relationships between a number of subscriber identity module identifiers corresponding to respective subscriber identity modules, if any, and a unique network location of the respective subscriber identity module in the communications network.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an accounting system coupled to each of a number of subscriber identity module servers to track usage of one of the subscriber identity modules by at least two clients.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the network is a physical port.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the network port is a virtual port.

8. A method to remotely operate wireless communications devices, comprising:

transmitting commands over a communications channel to a network port residing in a remote wireless communications client having at least one wireless communications device, the communications channel being part of a communications network that is distinct from a cellular communications network employed by the wireless communications device in providing wireless communications, where at least one of the commands includes a subscriber identity module identifier corresponding to a subscriber identity module providing subscriber identity information for use in operating the wireless communications device; and

receiving results from the remote wireless communications client in response to execution of the commands.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein at least one of the commands includes subscriber customization information for use in custom configuring the wireless communications device.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving the commands;

remotely requesting the subscriber identity information corresponding to the subscriber identifier module identifier;

remotely receiving the requested subscriber identity information over the communications channel; and

operating the wireless communications device using the requested subscriber identity information.

11. The method of claim 8 wherein the network is a physical port.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein the network port is a virtual port.
