Abstract

A method of processing data is provided, which includes a plurality of processes 502 to 505 equipped with dependencies 603 and a continuation manager 814 , said processes 502 to 505 including a plurality of sub-processes 507 . The continuation manager 814 recurrently selects ( 1301 ) each of said plurality of processes for execution in the order of their dependencies. The continuation manager further recurrently selects ( 1302 ) each of said plurality of sub-processes 507 within each of said plurality of processes 502 to 505 for execution. The output data generated at each of said selected sub-processes 507 is generated in the order of said dependencies 603.

recurrently selecting, in said continuation manager, each of a plurality of sub-processes within each of said data processing modules for execution based on the process tree;

determining if the selected sub-process requires input data from another of the plurality of sub-processes;

when the selected sub-process requires input data, determining if the sub-process processes the required input data;

generating an error if the sub-process is unable to process the required input data; and

generating output data at each of said selected sub-processes in the order of said dependencies.

2. A method of processing data according to claim 1 , further comprising initializing application modules of said data processing modules.

3. A method of processing data according to claim 2 , further comprising said application modules defining an application.

4. A method of processing data according to claim 2 , wherein said application module initialisation takes place when starting said application.

5. A method of processing data according to claim 2 , wherein said application module initialisation takes place after starting said application.

6. A method of processing data according to claim 1 , wherein each of said sub-processes defines a specific processing functionality of said data processing modules.

7. A method of processing data according to claim 1 , wherein said data processing modules generate final output data from said output data generated at each of said selected sub-processes.

8. A method of processing data according to claim 7 , wherein said final output data depends upon said output data of each of said sub-processes being output in the order specified by said dependencies.

9. A method of processing data according to claim 1 , wherein said continuation manager recurrently selects data processing modules and sub-processes thereof until such time as the application is ended.

10. A method of processing data according to claim 1 , wherein said continuation manager logs error data defining processing errors that occur during the processing of said recurrently selected sub-processes in an error log.

11. An apparatus configured to process image data in a compositing environment; comprising:

(a) a display means configured to display a plurality of data processing modules of the image processing system, each of which includes a plurality of sub-processes and is equipped with dependencies;

(b) a storage means configured to store said plurality of data processing modules and a continuation manager; and

(c) a processing means configured by said continuation manager to

(i) recurrently select each of said data processing modules for execution in the order of their dependencies based on a process tree;

(ii) further recurrently select each of said sub-processes within each of said data processing modules for execution based on the process tree;

(iii) determine if the selected sub-process required input data from another of the plurality of sub-processes;

(iv) when the selected sub-process requires input data, determine if the sub-process processes the required input data;

(v) generate an error if the sub-process is unable to process the required input data; and

(iii) generate output data at each of said selected sub-processes in the order of said dependencies.

12. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 11 , wherein said data processing modules comprises application modules, which are initialised.

13. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 12 , wherein said application modules defines an application.

14. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 12 , wherein said application module initialisation takes place when starting said application.

15. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 12 , wherein said application module initialisation takes place after starting said application.

16. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 11 , wherein each of said sub-processes defines a specific processing functionality of said data processing modules.

17. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 11 , wherein said data processing modules generate final output data from said output data generated at each of said selected sub-processes.

18. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 17 , wherein said final output data depends upon said output data of each of said sub-processes being output in the order specified by said dependencies.

19. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 11 , wherein said continuation manager recurrently selects data processing modules and sub-processes thereof until such time as the application is ended.

20. Apparatus configured to process data according to claim 11 , wherein said continuation manager logs error data defining processing errors that occur during the processing of said recurrently selected sub-processes in an error log.

21. A computer system programmed to process image data in a compositing environment, comprising a processor, a continuation manager, and a plurality of data processing modules, each of which includes a plurality of sub-processes and is equipped with dependencies, said processor, when executed, is configured to perform the processing steps of:

recurrently selecting each of said data processing modules for execution in the order of their dependencies based on a process tree;

further recurrently selecting each of said sub-processes within each of said data processing modules for execution based on the process tree;

determining if the selected sub-process requires input data from another of the plurality of sub-processes;

when the selected sub-process requires input data, determining if the sub-process processes the required input data;

generating an error if the sub-process is unable to process the required input data; and

generating output data at each of said selected sub-processes in the order of said dependencies.
