Abstract

Distortion due to transmission characteristics of a transmission medium is corrected by measuring leakage in a signal orthogonal to a received signal. The frequency response of an equalizer is adaptively adjusted until the measured leakage is at a local minimum.

Claims (46)

1. An apparatus for adaptively minimizing distortion in a received modulated signal in a receiver, the apparatus comprising:

a leakage sensor which provides a frequency response error based on leakage measured on a leakage signal orthogonal to the received modulated signal;

an equalizer controller coupled to the leakage sensor which adjusts the frequency response of an equalizer in the receiver dependent on the frequency response error to minimize the measured leakage;

a decision circuit which modifies the frequency response error to increase the rate at which the frequency response error is adjusted by the equalizer controller while the measured leakage is outside a first predetermined window; and

a search limit establisher circuit which modifies the frequency response error to increase the rate at which the frequency response error is adjusted by the equalizer controller while the measured leakage is outside a second predetermined window and the first predetermined window.

2. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the frequency response error is a difference between currently measured leakage and previously measured leakage.

3. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the received modulated signal is an amplitude modulated signal.

4. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the measured leakage is the voltage of the leakage signal.

5. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the measured leakage is the current of the leakage signal.

6. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the measured leakage is the integrated power of the leakage signal.

7. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the equalizer controller is an integrator.

8. An apparatus for adaptively minimizing distortion in a received modulated signal in a receiver, the apparatus comprising:

a leakage sensor which provides a frequency response error based on leakage measured on a leakage signal orthogonal to the received modulated signal;

an equalizer controller coupled to the leakage sensor which adjusts the frequency response of an equalizer in the receiver dependent on the frequency response error to minimize the measured leakage;

wherein the received modulated signal is one component selected form the I and Q components of a Quadrature Modulated signal and the leakage signal is the other component of the I and Q components; and

wherein the leakage is measured during a periodic clock recovery interval.

9. A method for adaptively minimizing distortion in a received modulated signal in a receiver comprising:

providing a frequency response error based on leakage measured on a leakage signal orthogonal to the received modulated signal;

adjusting the frequency response of an equalizer in the receiver dependent on the frequency response error to minimize the measured leakage;

modifying the frequency response error to increase the rate at which the frequency response error is adjusted while the measured leakage is outside a first predetermined window; and

modifying the frequency response error to increase the rate at which the frequency response error is adjusted while the measured leakage is outside a second predetermined window and first predetermined window.

10. The method as claimed in claim 9 wherein the frequency response error is a difference between currently measured leakage and previously measured leakage.

11. The method as claimed in claim 9 wherein the received modulated signal is an amplitude modulated signal.

12. The method as claimed in claim 9 wherein the measured leakage is the voltage of the leakage signal.

13. The method as claimed in claim 9 wherein the measured leakage is the current of the leakage signal.

14. The method as claimed in claim 9 wherein the measured leakage is the integrated power of the leakage signal.

15. A method for adaptively minimizing distortion in a received modulated signal in a receiver comprising:

providing a frequency response error based on leakage measured on a leakage signal orthogonal to the received modulated signal;

adjusting the frequency response of an equalizer in the receiver dependent on the frequency response error to minimize the measured leakage;

wherein the received modulated signal is one component selected from the I and Q components of a Quadrature Modulated signal and the leakage signal is the other component of the I and Q components; and

wherein the leakage is measured during a periodic clock recovery interval.

16. An apparatus for adaptively minimizing distortion in a received modulated signal in a receiver comprising:

means for providing a frequency response error based on leakage measured on a leakage signal orthogonal to the received modulated signal;

means for adjusting the frequency response of an equalizer in the receiver dependent on the frequency response error to minimize the measured leakage;

decision means which increases the frequency response error to increase the rate at which the frequency response error is adjusted by the means for adjusting while the measured leakage is outside a first predetermined window; and

search limit establisher means which increases the frequency response error to increase the rate at which the frequency response error is adjusted by the means for adjusting while the measured leakage is outside a second predetermined window and the first predetermined window.

17. The apparatus as claimed in claim 16 wherein the frequency response error is a difference between currently measured leakage and previously measured leakage.

18. The apparatus as claimed in claim 16 wherein the received modulated signal is an amplitude modulated signal.

19. The apparatus as claimed in claim 16 wherein the measured leakage is the voltage of the leakage signal.

20. The apparatus as claimed in claim 16 wherein the measured leakage is the current of the leakage signal.

21. The apparatus as claimed in claim 16 wherein the measured leakage is the integrated power of the leakage signal.

22. An apparatus for adaptively minimizing distortion in a received modulated signal in a receiver comprising:

means for providing a frequency response error based on leakage measured on a leakage signal orthogonal to the received modulated signal;

means for adjusting the frequency response of an equalizer in the receiver dependent on the frequency response error to minimize the measured leakage;

wherein the received modulated signal is one component selected from the I and Q components of a Quadrature Modulated signal and the leakage signal is the other component of the I and Q components; and

wherein the leakage is measured during a periodic clock recovery interval.
