Abstract

The invention relates to therapeutic agents for use in the prevention or treatment of Alzheimer's disease. In particular the invention relates to use of inhibitors of cell cycle re-entry and progression to the G1/S transition or inhibitors of progression of the cell cycle through the G1/S transition point in the prevention or treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Claims (15)

1. A method of reducing the accumulation of an Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related protein in a human Alzheimer's disease patient, wherein said method comprises:

(a) administering to said patient a composition comprising rapamycin; and then

(b) administering to said patient a composition comprising doxorubicin, wherein the amounts and sequential administration of said rapamycin and said doxorubicin reduce the level of an AD-related protein in neuronal cells of said patient, wherein said AD-related protein is selected from the group consisting of amyloid precursor protein (APP), AD-type hyperphosphorylated tau protein and AD-type paired helical filament (PHF) tau protein.

2. A method of reducing the accumulation of an Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related protein in a human Alzheimer's disease patient, wherein said method comprises:

(a) administering to said patient a composition comprising dexrazoxane; and then

(b) administering to said patient a composition comprising doxorubicin, wherein the amounts and sequential administration of said dexrazoxane and said doxorubicin reduce the level of an AD-related protein in neuronal cells of said patient, wherein said AD-related protein is selected from the group consisting of amyloid precursor protein (APP), AD-type hyperphosphorylated tau protein and AD-type paired helical filament (PHF) tau protein.

3. A method of reducing the expression of an Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related protein in a human Alzheimer's disease patient, wherein said method comprises:

(a) administering to said patient a composition comprising rapamycin; and then

(b) administering to said patient a composition comprising doxorubicin, wherein the amounts and sequential administration of said rapamycin and said doxorubicin reduce the level of an AD-related protein in neuronal cells of said patient, wherein said AD-related protein is selected from the group consisting of amyloid precursor protein (APP), AD-type hyperphosphorylated tau protein and AD-type paired helical filament (PHF) tau protein.

4. A method of reducing the expression of an Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related protein in a human Alzheimer's disease patient, wherein said method comprises:

(a) administering to said patient a composition comprising dexrazoxane; and then

(b) administering to said patient a composition comprising doxorubicin, wherein the amounts and sequential administration of said dexrazoxane and said doxorubicin reduce the level of an AD-related protein in neuronal cells of said patient, wherein said AD-related protein is selected from the group consisting of amyloid precursor protein (APP), AD-type hyperphosphorylated tau protein and AD-type paired helical filament (PHF) tau protein.

5. The method of any one of claims 1 - 4 , wherein the AD-related protein is amyloid precursor protein (APP).

6. The method of any one of claims 1 - 4 , wherein the AD-related protein is AD-type hyperphosphorylated tau protein.

7. The method of any one of claims 1 - 4 , wherein the AD-related protein is AD-type paired helical filament (PHF) tau protein.
