Abstract

Nucleic acid molecules encoding an R1-protein from wheat are provided. Also provided are transgenic plant cells and plants containing the nucleic acid molecules, and starch obtainable from the transgenic plant cells and plants.

Claims (12)

1. A wheat cell transformed with a DNA molecule consisting of:

an isolated DNA molecule selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 1 and SEQ ID NO: 9,

wherein the presence of the DNA molecule leads to inhibition of expression of at least one endogenous gene encoding an R1 protein.

2. The wheat cell of claim 1 , wherein the DNA molecule is transcribed into antisense RNA, which leads to the inhibition of expression of at least one endogenous gene encoding an R1 protein.

3. The wheat cell of claim 1 , wherein the DNA molecule is transcribed into a cosuppression RNA, which leads to the inhibition of expression of at least one endogenous gene encoding an R1 protein.

4. The wheat cell of claim 2 , wherein said DNA molecule is linked in antisense orientation with one or more regulatory elements ensuring the transcription and/or translation in said cell.

5. A transgenic plant comprising the wheat cell of claim 1 , wherein the plant is a wheat plant.

6. Propagation material from the plant of claim 5 .

7. A seed from the transgenic plant of claim 5 , wherein the seed comprises said wheat cell.

8. A process for producing modified starch comprising extracting modified starch from the plant of claim 5 or from parts thereof.

9. A wheat cell transformed with a DNA molecule consisting of an isolated DNA molecule encoding the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 2 or SEQ ID NO: 10, wherein said DNA molecule contains a sequence with a homology of over 90% to the nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 or SEQ ID NO: 9, and wherein the presence of said DNA molecule leads to inhibition of expression of at least one endogenous gene encoding an R1 protein.

10. The wheat cell of claim 9 , wherein said DNA molecule contains a sequence with the homology of over 95% to a nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 or SEQ ID NO: 9.
