Abstract

Microfluidic devices, systems, and methods measure viscosity, flow times, and/or pressures, other flow characteristics within the channels, and the measured flow characteristics can be used to generate a desired flow. Multi-reservoir pressure modulator and pressure controller systems, electrokinetic systems and/or other fluid transport mechanisms can generate the flow, controllably mix fluids, and the like.

Claims (18)

1. A method for determining a relative viscosity of a sample fluid and a reference fluid, the method comprising:

(a) establishing a steady flow of the reference fluid through two microfluidic channel segments of different hydrodynamic resistance, a first microfluidic channel segment and a second microfluidic channel segment, each of the two microfluidic channel segments having an inlet and an outlet;

(b) introducing a detectable perturbation into the steady flow of reference fluid at the inlet of each of the two microfluidic channel segments at a first time;

(c) measuring a first transit time that transpires from the first time until the detectable perturbation exits the outlet of the first microfluidic channel segment;

(d) measuring a second transit time that transpires from the first time until the detectable perturbation exits the outlet of the second microfluidic channel segment;

(e) calculating a difference in the first and second transit times for the reference fluid;

repeating steps (a)–(e) with a sample fluid, thereby determining a difference in the first and second transit times for the sample fluid; and

determining a relative viscosity of the sample fluid by comparing the difference in the first and second transit times for the reference fluid and the difference in the first and second transit times for the sample fluid.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an absolute viscosity of the sample fluid by;

determining the difference in first and second transit times for a plurality of reference fluids, wherein the difference in first and second transit times for the sample fluid lies within the range of the various differences in first and second times for the plurality of reference fluids, and

comparing the difference in first and second transit times for the sample to the various differences in first and second times for the plurality of reference fluids.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inlets of the first microfluidic channel segment and the second microfluidic channel segment meet at a “Y” junction.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inlets of the first microfluidic channel segment and the second microfluidic channel segment meet at a “T” junction.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of flowing the sample fluid through two microfluidic channel segments comprises applying a pressure difference across the two microfluidic channel segments.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of flowing the sample fluid through two microfluidic channel segments comprises applying an electrokinetic driving force across the two microfluidic channel segments.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the detectable perturbation comprises a perturbation in a fluorescence signal.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the perturbation in a fluorescence signal comprises an increase in fluorescence.
