Abstract

A printer and a process for correlating printed subject matter with subject matter that is meant to be printed by a printer with a printing mechanism or print engine such as a thermal printer including a print head, a platen, a media upon which labels are printed and a printer controller for imparting print data to the print head. An imager sends printed data as imaged to a read after print (RAP) controller for comparing the data received from the imager to data imparted to the print head or other printing mechanism. A tap, taps the data imparted from the print head and correlates it with the imaged data to determine the media speed, the image alignment, label analysis, weighing of blemishes, the gaps printed on a label, and other criteria.

Claims (19)

1. A printer for printing labels comprising:

a printer controller;

a printer engine including a media support for moving labels to be printed on said media for providing a printed output on said labels;

an imager for providing data related to the printed output after printing;

a tap from the data which is derived from said printer controller which relates to the image to printed on said label; and,

a read after print (RAP) controller for receiving the tapped data from said printer controller and said imager for comparing the printed image to the data to be printed.

2. The printer as claimed in claim 1 further comprising:

said print engine having a thermal print head for printing; and,

said data related to said image is the image to be printed by said thermal print head.

3. The printer as claimed in claim 2 further comprising:

a processor in said RAP controller for acquiring and aligning the image that has been printed and acquired by said imager.

4. The printer as claimed in claim 1 further comprising:

a processor in said RAP controller for receiving the image printed on said label in reference to a pre-established criticality.

5. The printer as claimed in claim 4 further comprising:

said processor of said RAP controller being provided with a pre-established weighting criteria for the quality of a given printing on a label.

6. The printer as claimed in claim 1 further comprising:

a processor in said RAP controller which rotates and translates the image of said label to a bit map.

7. The printer as claimed in claim 1 further comprising:

a processor in conjunction with a look-up table of said RAP controller to determine the validity of the printed label against standards established in said look-up table as to the validity of a bar code, text, or graphics.
