Abstract

A monitor adapted for mounting in an automobile headrest is provided. A screen structure of the monitor is pivotable about an upper edge thereof, such that the monitor occupies little volume within the headrest. A viewing angle of the screen structure is independently adjustable by a viewer, such that the viewer can continuously select the optimum viewing angle with changing conditions inside the automobile. The screen structure automatically retracts into a housing when struck. Thus, the monitor poses little risk of injury to passengers.

Claims (34)

1. A video monitor adapted to be mounted to a headrest of a vehicle seat, the monitor comprising:

a housing defining a storage cavity and a first hinge portion adjacent an upper edge thereof; and

a screen structure defining a second hinge portion adjacent an upper edge thereof, the second hinge portion cooperating with the first hinge portion to pivotably secure the screen structure to the housing, the screen structure being adapted to fit substantially within the storage cavity when the screen structure is in a storage configuration; wherein

an angular orientation of the screen structure relative to the housing is adjustable without moving the headrest or the seat; and

wherein a rear surface of the screen structure comprises a channel running in a direction from a lower edge of the screen structure toward the upper edge of the screen structure.

2. The video monitor of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second hinge portions is self-tensioning.

3. The video monitor of claim 1 , wherein a floor of the housing comprises a pivot aperture.

4. The video monitor of claim 3 , further comprising a bracket disposed at a first end within the channel and disposed at a second end within the pivot aperture.

The video monitor of claim 4 , wherein the bracket is slidable within the channel and pivotable within the pivot aperture, such that when the screen structure is in the storage configuration, the bracket is substantially parallel to the screen structure rear surface, and when the screen structure is moved from the storage configuration to the viewing configuration an angle between the bracket and the screen structure rear surface increases.

6. The video monitor of claim 1 , wherein when the screen structure is pivoted from the storage configuration a portion of the screen structure protrudes from the housing.

7. A video monitor adapted to be mounted to a headrest of a vehicle seat, the monitor comprising:

a housing having a first hinge portion and having a pivot aperture attached to a floor thereof;

a screen structure having a second hinge portion, the second hinge portion cooperating with the first hinge portion to pivotably secure the screen structure to the housing, the screen structure further comprising a channel in a rear surface thereof; and

a bracket having a first end pivotably retained within the pivot aperture and a second end slidably retained within the channel.

8. The video monitor of claim 7 , wherein as the screen structure pivots with respect to the housing from a storage configuration, the bracket first end pivots within the pivot aperture and the bracket second end slides within the channel.

9. The video monitor of claim 8 , wherein as the screen structure pivots further, an angle between a longitudinal axis of the bracket and a rear face of the screen structure increases.

10. The video monitor of claim 9 , wherein a maximum angle between a longitudinal axis of the bracket and a rear face of the screen structure is less than 90°.

11. The video monitor of claim 9 , wherein the maximum angle is between 75° and 85°.

12. The video monitor of claim 7 , wherein a perpendicular force applied to a front face of the screen structure causes the bracket first end to pivot within the pivot aperture and the bracket second end to slide within the channel such that the screen structure approaches a storage configuration.

13. The video monitor of claim 7 , wherein at least one of the first and second hinge portions is self-tensioning.

14. A video monitor adapted to be mounted to a headrest of a vehicle seat, the monitor comprising:

a housing defining en envelope of space defining a storage cavity and a first hinge portion coupled therewith; and

a screen structure comprising a front face and a rear face, the front face comprising a viewing screen, the screen structure defining a second hinge portion coupled therewith, the second hinge portion cooperating with the first hinge portion to pivotably secure the screen structure to the housing, the screen structure being pivotable about an axis that is closer to the front face of the screen structure than the rear face of the screen structure, the screen structure being configured to fit substantially within the envelope of space when the screen structure is in a storage configuration; wherein

an angular orientation of the screen structure relative to the housing is adjustable without moving the headrest or the seat; and

when the screen structure is pivoted from the storage configuration a portion of the screen structure protrudes from the housing.

15. The video monitor of claim 14 , wherein the second hinge portion is coupled with the screen structure adjacent at least one of the front face of the screen structure and a surface of the screen structure transverse to the front face of the screen structure.

16. The video monitor of claim 14 , wherein the first and second hinge portions are configured such that substantially all of the screen structure moves away from the floor of the cavity of the housing when the screen structure is pivoted outward from the housing.

17. A video monitor adapted to be mounted to a headrest of a vehicle seat, the monitor comprising:

a housing defining a storage cavity and a first hinge portion coupled therewith; and

a screen structure comprising a viewing screen on a front face thereof, the screen structure defining a second hinge portion coupled therewith, the second hinge portion cooperating with the first hinge portion to pivotably secure the screen structure to the housing, the screen structure being pivotable about an axis adjacent at least one of the front face of the screen structure and an outer ledge of the screen structure transverse to the front face of the screen structure, the screen structure being adapted to fit substantially within the storage cavity with said outer edge being substantially horizontally oriented when the screen structure is in a storage configuration; wherein

an angular orientation of the screen structure relative to the housing is adjustable without moving the headrest or the seat; and

when the screen structure is pivoted from the storage configuration a portion of the screen structure protrudes from the housing.

18. The video monitor of claim 17 , wherein the axis is closer to the front face of the screen structure than a rear face of the screen structure.

19. The video monitor of claim 17 , wherein the first and second hinge portions are configured such that substantially all of the screen structure moves away from the floor of the cavity of the housing when the screen structure is pivoted outward from the housing.
