Abstract

The present invention relates to methods of treating an individual with diabetes mellitus by administering to said individual an effective amount of copper chelators, hydrazine compounds, and/or substrate analogues. The invention also relates to methods of treating an individual with diabetes mellitus by lessening fructosamine odixase activity in said individual. Provided within is disclosure pertaining to treatment, pharmaceutical compositions, dosage ranges, and uses of fructosamine oxidase enzyme inhibitors to lessen fructosamine oxidase activity.

Claims (109)

1. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising administering to said human a pharmaceutically acceptable amount of a copper binding triene compound.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said triene is administered orally.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said triene is administered by a non-oral route.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said administration is by injection.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene is administered.

6. The method of claim 2 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene is administered.

7. The method of claim 3 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene is administered.

8. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising orally administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 1.2 to about 2.4 grams per day.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene is administered.

10. The method of claim 5 wherein about 600 milligrams to about 1200 milligrams of said triene is administered two times per day.

11. The method of claim 5 wherein about 400 milligrams to about 800 milligrams of said triene is administered three times per day.

12. The method of claim 5 wherein about 300 milligrams to about 600 milligrams of said triene is administered four times per day.

13. The method of any of claims 1 - 11 or 12 wherein said triene is a triene salt.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein said triene salt is a triene hydrochloride salt.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein said triene salt is a dihydrochloride salt.

18. The method of either of claims 16 or 17 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

19. The method of either of claims 16 or 17 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

20. The method of any of claims 1 - 11 or 12 wherein said triene is triethylenetetramine.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

22. The method of claim 20 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

23. The method of claim 20 wherein said triethylenetetramine is a triethylenetetramine hydrochloride salt.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said triethylenetetramine hydrochloride salt is triethylenetetramine dihydrochloride.

25. The method of either of claims 23 or 24 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

26. The method of either of claims 23 or 24 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

27. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising orally administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 9 mg/kg to about 200 mg/kg per day.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

30. The method of claim 28 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

31. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising orally administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 11 mg/kg to about 100 mg/kg per day.

32. The method of claim 31 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

33. The method of claim 32 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

34. The method of claim 32 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

35. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising orally administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 13 mg/kg to about 75 mg/kg per day.

36. The method of claim 35 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

37. The method of claim 36 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

38. The method of claim 36 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

39. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising orally administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 15 mg/kg to about 50 mg/kg per day.

40. The method of claim 39 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

41. The method of claim 40 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

42. The method of claim 40 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

43. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising orally administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 17 mg/kg to about 35 mg/kg per day.

44. The method of claim 43 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

45. The method of claim 44 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

46. The method of claim 44 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

47. The method of any of claims 27 - 45 or 46 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene is administered.

48. The method of any of claims 27 - 45 or 46 wherein said triene is a triene salt.

49. The method of claim 48 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene salt is administered.

50. The method of claim 48 wherein said triene salt is a triene hydrochloride salt.

51. The method of claim 48 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene hydrochloride salt is administered.

52. The method of claim 50 wherein said triene hydrochloride salt is a dihydrochloride salt.

53. The method of claim 52 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene dihydrochloride salt is administered.

54. The method of any of claims 27 - 45 or 46 wherein said triene is triethylenetetramine.

55. The method of claim 54 wherein a long-acting release form of said triethylenetetramine is administered.

56. The method of claim 54 wherein said triethylenetetramine is a triethylenetetramine hydrochloride salt.

57. The method of claim 56 wherein a long-acting release form of said triethylenetetramine hydrochloride salt is administered.

58. The method of claim 56 wherein said triethylenetetramine dihydrochloride salt is triethylenetetramine dihydrochloride.

59. The method of claim 58 wherein a long-acting release form of said triethylenetetramine dihydrochloride is administered.

60. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 120 milligrams to about 240 milligrams per day by a non-oral route of administration.

61. The method of claim 60 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

62. The method of claim 60 wherein said triene is administered by infusion.

63. The method of claim 60 wherein said triene is administered by injection.

64. The method of claim 60 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

65. The method of claim 60 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

66. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 0.9 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg per day by a non-oral route of administration.

67. The method of claim 66 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

68. The method of claim 66 wherein said triene is administered by infusion.

69. The method of claim 66 wherein said triene is administered by injection.

70. The method of claim 66 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

71. The method of claim 66 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

72. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 1.1 mg/kg to about 10 mg/kg per day by a non-oral route of administration.

73. The method of claim 72 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

74. The method of claim 72 wherein said triene is administered by infusion.

75. The method of claim 72 wherein said triene is administered by injection.

76. The method of claim 72 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

77. The method of claim 72 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

78. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 1.3 mg/kg to about 7.5 mg/kg per day by a non-oral route of administration.

79. The method of claim 78 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

80. The method of claim 78 wherein said triene is administered by infusion.

81. The method of claim 78 wherein said triene is administered by injection.

82. The method of claim 78 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

83. The method of claim 78 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

84. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 1.5 mg/kg to about 5.0 mg/kg per day by a non-oral route of administration.

85. The method of claim 84 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

86. The method of claim 84 wherein said triene is administered by infusion.

87. The method of claim 84 wherein said triene is administered by injection.

88. The method of claim 84 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

89. The method of claim 84 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

90. A method for treating a human for diabetes mellitus comprising administering to said human a triene that binds copper in an amount ranging from about 1.7 mg/kg to about 3.5 mg/kg per day by a non-oral route of administration.

91. The method of claim 90 wherein said triene is administered in a single dose or in divided doses.

92. The method of claim 90 wherein said triene is administered by infusion.

93. The method of claim 90 wherein said triene is administered by injection.

94. The method of claim 90 wherein said human has type 1 diabetes.

95. The method of claim 90 wherein said human has type 2 diabetes.

96. The method of any of claims 60 - 94 or 95 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene is administered.

97. The method of any of claims 60 - 94 or 95 wherein said triene is a triene salt.

98. The method of claim 97 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene salt is administered.

99. The method of claim 97 wherein said triene salt is a triene hydrochloride salt.

100. The method of claim 99 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene hydrochloride salt is administered.

101. The method of claim 99 wherein said triene hydrochloride salt is a dihydrochloride salt.

102. The method of claim 101 wherein a long-acting release form of said triene dihydrochloride salt is administered.

103. The method of any of claims 60 - 94 or 95 wherein said triene is triethylenetetramine.

104. The method of claim 103 wherein a long-acting release form of said triethylenetetramine is administered.

105. The method of claim 103 wherein said triethylenetetramine is a triethylenetetramine hydrochloride salt.

106. The method of claim 103 wherein a long-acting release form of said triethylenetetramine hydrochloride salt is administered.

107. The method of claim 105 wherein said triethylenetetramine hydrochloride salt is triethylenetetramine dihydrochloride.

108. The method of claim 107 wherein a long-acting release form of said triethylenetetramine dihydrochloride is administered.

109. The method of claim 1 wherein said copper binding triene is a copper chelating agent effective to inhibit fructosamine oxidase activity.
