Abstract

A system is described comprising: a first node coupled to a second node by a communications network, the first node and second node communicating digital and/or analog signals over the communications network; the first node comprising a power output selector module to apply a specified voltage to the communications network to power one or more devices communicatively coupled to the communications network; and the second node using the voltage to provide power to one or more electrical components.

Claims (31)

1. A system, comprising:

a first node comprising a transmitter to transmit modulated signals carrying multimedia data over a coaxial cable and power generation circuitry to provide a voltage over said coaxial cable; and

a reflector apparatus communicatively coupled to said coaxial cable to receive and process said signals transmitted by said first node and to retransmit said signals to a third node communicatively coupled to said coaxial cable, said reflector apparatus further having a power input electrically coupled to said coaxial cable to power said reflector apparatus using said voltage provided by said first node.

2. The system as in claim 1 wherein said reflector apparatus comprises:

frequency shifting means for converting said signals transmitted by said first node from a first frequency range to a second frequency range.

3. The system as in claim 2 wherein said reflector device further comprises:

an amplifier for amplifying said signals by a specified amount prior to transmitting said signals to said third node.

4. The system as in claim 1 wherein said multimedia data comprises cable programming transmitted over said coaxial cable by a cable service provider.

5. The system as in claim 1 wherein said multimedia data comprises satellite programming transmitted via a satellite dish communicatively coupled to said first node by a satellite service provider.

6. A system comprising:

a first node coupled to a reflector apparatus by a coaxial cable, said first node and reflector apparatus communicating digital and/or analog signals carrying multimedia data over said coaxial cable and said reflector apparatus to retransmit said signals to a third node communicatively coupled to said coaxial cable;

said first node comprising a power output selector module to apply a specific voltage to said coaxial cable to power one or more devices communicatively coupled to said coaxial cable; and

said reflector apparatus using said voltage to provide the only source of power to one or more electrical components.

7. The system as in claim 6 wherein one of said electrical components is a signal amplifier to amplify said digital and/or analog signals.

8. The system as in claim 7 wherein said specified voltage is a DC voltage.

9. The system as in claim 6 wherein said reflector apparatus comprises:

frequency shifting means for converting said signals transmitted by said first node from a first frequency range to a second frequency range.

10. The system as in claim 6 wherein said reflector apparatus further comprises:

an amplifier for amplifying said digital and/or analog signals by a specified amount prior to transmitting said signals to said third node.

11. The system as in claim 6 wherein said digital and/or analog signals are comprised of cable programming transmitted over said coaxial cable by a cable service provider.

12. The system as in claim 6 wherein said digital and/or analog signals are comprised of satellite programming transmitted via a satellite dish communicatively coupled to said first node by a satellite service provider.

13. A method comprising:

communicatively coupling a first node and a reflector apparatus on a wired coaxial cable, said first node and said reflector apparatus communicating data signals including multimedia data across said coaxial cable said reflector apparatus to retransmit said data signals to a third node communicatively coupled to said coaxial cable;

said first node applying a specified voltage on said coaxial cable to power said reflector apparatus; and

said reflector apparatus using said specified voltage to provide the only source of power to one or more electrical components.

14. The method as in claim 13 wherein one of said electrical components is a signal amplifier to amplify said digital and/or analog signals.

15. The method as in claim 14 wherein said specified voltage is a DC voltage.

16. The method as in claim 13 wherein said reflector apparatus further converts said data signals transmitted by said first node from a first frequency range to a second frequency range.

17. The method as in claim 13 wherein said reflector apparatus further amplifies said data signals by a specified amount prior to transmitting said data signals to said third node.

18. The method as in claim 13 wherein said data signals are comprised of cable programming transmitted over said coaxial cable by a cable service provider.

19. The method as in claim 17 wherein said data signals are comprised of satellite programming transmitted via a satellite dish communicatively coupled to said first node by a satellite service provider.
