Abstract

A firearm comprising a gun barrel for accommodating a desired round of ammunition having a bullet, a shell casing and a primer. The gun barrel has a firing pin associated with a chamber of the gun barrel and the firing pin is activated by a trigger assembly. When the firing pin is activated by the trigger assembly, a striking surface of the firing pin strikes the primer and discharges the round of ammunition to propel the bullet out of the opposite end of the gun barrel. The firing pin, the interior surface of the barrel, or some other surface which contacts the shell casing carries a unique identifying indicia. Upon discharge of the round of ammunition, the component of the firearm carrying the unique identifying indicia transfers an impression of the unique identifying indicia to an exterior surface of the shell casing to identify that the shell casing was discharged by that firearm.

Claims (45)

1. A firearm, comprising:

a gun barrel,

a chamber coaxially extensive with the gun barrel for accommodating a round of ammunition including

a bullet,

a shell casing containing a propellant, and

a primer,

the chamber having a firing pin associated therewith that is activated by a trigger assembly to strike the primer and ignite the propellant and discharge the bullet from the firearm, and

a unique identifying indica for imprinting a corresponding identifying mark on an exterior surface of the shell casing when the shell casing expands upon discharge of the round of ammunition by the firearm, wherein

the identifying indicia is formed on a base surface located on a radially inner end of an indicia insert contained in a radial bore extending radially outwards from an inner surface of the chamber and normal to a longitudinal axis of the shell casing with the radially inner end of the indicia insert being located in proximity to an outer cylindrical surface of the shell casing in the chamber, wherein

the base surface is recessed from the inner surface of the chamber in a radially outwards direction, and

an exposed surface of the identifying indicia formed on the base surface of the radially inner end of the indicia insert forms a cylindrical surface coincident with and substantially flush with the inner surface of the chamber.

2. The firearm according to claim 1 , wherein the insert, once received by the radial bore formed in the gun barrel, is permanently affixed to the gun barrel to prevent removal of the insert therefrom.

3. The firearm according to claim 1 , wherein the end surface of the insert, carrying the unique identifying indicia, is one of cylindrical, rectangular, hexagonal and square in shape.

4. The firearm according to claim 1 , wherein the insert, carrying the unique identifying indicia, is one of mechanically bonded, welded, soldered and has an interference fit with the radial bore of the gun barrel.

5. The firearm according to claim 1 , wherein the unique identifying indicia is one of a code, a bar code, a character set an alphanumeric set, a symbol, a design and a mark.

6. The firearm according to claim 1 , wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which is raised above the base surface and thereby extends radially inwards from the base surface and towards the inner surface of the chamber.

7. The firearm according to claim 1 , wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which is recessed into the base surface and thereby extends radially outwards from the base surface and inner surface of the chamber.

8. The firearm according to claim 1 , wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which is raised above the base surface and extends radially inwards from the base surface and towards the inner surface of the chamber and at least one indicia feature which is recessed into the base surface and extends radially outwards from the base surface and the inner surface of the chamber.

9. The firearm according to claim 1 , wherein the unique identifying indicia is formed by a laser.

10. A method for imprinting a unique identifying indicia onto a shell casing upon discharge of a firearm, wherein the firearm includes a gun barrel, a chamber coaxially extensive with the gun barrel for accommodating a round of ammunition including a bullet, a shell casing containing a propellant and a primer and wherein the chamber has a firing pin associated therewith that is activated by a trigger assembly to strike the primer and ignite the propellant to discharge the bullet from the firearm, the method comprising the steps of;

locating a unique identifying indicia on an exterior surface of the shell casing, wherein

the identifying indicia is formed on an inner surface of the chamber and in proximity to an outer cylindrical surface of the shell casing in the chamber, wherein

the identifying indicia is formed on a base surface recessed from the inner surface of the chamber in a radially outwards direction, and

an exposed surface of the identifying indicia formed on the base surface of the radially inner end of the indicia insert forms a cylindrical surface coincident with and substantially flush with the inner surface of the chamber, so that

an identifying mark corresponding to the identifying indicia is imprinted on the outer cylindrical surface of the shell casing when the shell casing expands upon discharge of the round of ammunition by the firearm.

11. In a firearm having a chamber for accommodating a round of ammunition including a shell casing containing a propellant, a shell casing marking mechanism, comprising:

a unique identifying indicia for imprinting a corresponding identifying mark on an exterior surface of the shell casing when the shell casing expands upon discharge of the propellant, wherein

the identifying indicia is formed on an inner surface of the chamber with the identifying indicia being located in proximity to an outer cylindrical surface of the shell casing in the chamber, wherein

the identifying indicia includes a base surface bearing at least one indicia feature, wherein

the base surface is recessed from the inner surface of the chamber in a radially outwards direction, and wherein

an exposed surface of the identifying indicia formed a cylindrical surface coincident with and substantially flush with the inner surface of the chamber, so that

the outer surface of the shell expends outward in region adjacent the recessed base surface and against the at least one indicia feature due to gas pressure from the propellant when the propellant is ignited.

12. The shell casing marking mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein:

the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which is raised above the base surface and thereby extends radially inwards from the base surface and towards the inner surface of the chamber.

13. The shell casing marking mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which is recessed into the base surface and thereby extends radially outwards from the base surface and the inner surface of the chamber.

14. The shell casing marking mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which is raised above the base surface and extends radially inwards from the base surface and towards the inner surface of the chamber and at least one indicia feature which is recessed into the base surface and extends radially outwards from the base surface and the inner surface of the chamber.

15. A firearm comprising:

a gun barrel;

a chamber, for accommodating a round of ammunition, extending coaxially with the gun barrel;

the chamber having a cylindrical inner surface defining a chamber bore for closely receiving a shell casing of a round of ammunition; the chamber having a radial bore extending substantially normal to the chamber bore which receives an insert, and a radially inner most surface of the insert defining a unique identifying indicia for transferring a corresponding identifying impression, of the unique identifying indicia, to an exterior surface of a shell casing upon expansion thereof during discharge of a round of ammunition; and

the radially inner most surface of the insert, defining the unique identifying indicia, being coincident with and substantially flush with the cylindrical inner surface defining the chamber bore.

16. The firearm according to claim 15 , wherein the unique identifying indicia is one of a code, a bar code, a character set, an alphanumeric set, a symbol, a design and a mark.

17. The firearm according to claim 15 , wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which extends radially inwards from a base surface and towards the inner surface of the chamber.

18. The firearm according to claim 15 , wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which extends radially outwards from a base surface and is thereby recessed into the base surface.

19. The firearm according to claim 15 , wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which extends radially inwards from a base surface and towards the inner surface of the chamber and at least one indicia feature which extends radially outwards from the base surface and is thereby recessed into the base surface.
