Abstract

Multi-member cables which are comprised of two or more components (including component cables and non-cable components) held together by at least one adhesive element placed between the components, and methods for manufacturing such cables. Multi-member cables which are comprised of jacketed cables whose jackets are adhered together without the use of an adhesive element, such as by co-forming the jackets, and methods for manufacturing such cables are also discussed. Generally, the components will be separated from the multi-member cable by an installer, although other methods may also be used.

wherein said adhesive element is placed in contact with said first component cable, said second component cable, and said third component cable such that said first component cable, said second component cable and said third component cable are all adhered to said adhesive element;

wherein all of said component cables are twisted together; and

wherein said first component cable, said second component cable, and said third component cable can be separated from said adhesive element without damage to any of said first component cable, second component cable, and third component cable.

2. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein said adhesive element comprises plastic.

3. The multi-member cable of claim 2 wherein said plastic comprises polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

4. The multi-member cable of claim 1 further comprising a fourth component cable which is also adhered to said adhesive element.

5. The multi-member cable of claim 1 further comprising: a fourth component cable and a fifth component cable.

6. The multi-member cable of claim 5 wherein said adhesive element is also adhered to said fourth component cable and said fifth component cable.

7. The multi-member cable of claim 5 wherein said fourth component cable and said fifth component cable are also twisted together with said first component cable, said second component cable, and said third component cable.

8. The multi-member cable of claim 1 further comprising: a non-cable component to which said adhesive element is also adhered.

9. The multi-member cable of claim 8 wherein said non-cable component comprises a tube.

10. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein one of said at least two insulation layers of each of said first component cable, said second component cable and said third component cable comprises an inner insulative layer and the other comprises an outer jacket and said adherence is to said jacket.

11. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein said first component cable is adhered to said adhesive element with about three pounds of force.

12. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein said first component cable is adhered to said adhesive element with less than three pounds of force.

13. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein said first component cable comprises a voice or data cable.

14. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein said first component cable comprises a coaxial cable.

15. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein said first component cable comprises a low voltage power limited cable.

16. The multi member cable of claim 1 wherein said first component cable comprises a control cable.

17. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein said first component cable comprises an optical fiber cable.

18. The multi-member cable of claim 1 wherein said component cables are twisted into helixes.

19. A multi-member cable comprising:

a first adhesive element;

a second adhesive element;

a first component cable;

a second component cable;

a third component cable;

a fourth component cable; and

a fifth component cable;

wherein said first adhesive element is placed in contact with said first component cable, said second component cable, and said third component cable such that said first component cable, said second component cable and said third component cable are all adhered to said first adhesive element;

wherein said first component cable, said second component cable, and said third component cable can be separated from said adhesive element without damage to any of said first component cable, second component cable, and third component cable;

wherein said second adhesive element is adhered to said fourth component cable and said fifth component cable and at least one of said first component cable, second component cable, or said third component cable; and

wherein said component cables are twisted together.

20. A multi-member cable comprising:

an adhesive element; and

at least three component cables;

wherein said adhesive element is placed in contact with said at least three component cables and said at least three component cables are all releasably adhered to said adhesive element;

wherein said at least three component cables are all twisted together; and

wherein at least one of said at least three component cables comprises a coaxial cable.

21. The multi-member cable of claim 20 wherein said adhesive element comprises plastic.

22. The multi-member cable of claim 20 further comprising: a non-cable component to which said adhesive element is also adhered.

23. The multi-member cable of claim 20 wherein said at least three component cables are adhered to said adhesive element with about three pounds of force.

24. The multi-member cable of claim 20 wherein said at least three component cables are adhered to said adhesive element with less than three pounds of force.

25. The multi-member cable of claim 20 wherein said at least three component cables are twisted into helixes.

26. The multi-member cable of claim 20 wherein said adhesive element comprises plastic.

27. The multi-member cable of claim 20 further comprising: a non-cable component to which said adhesive element is also adhered.

28. The multi-member cable of claim 20 wherein said at least three component cables are adhered to said adhesive element with about three pounds of force.

29. The multi-member cable of claim 20 wherein said at least three component cables are adhered to said adhesive element with less than three pounds of force.

30. A multi-member cable comprising:

at least three component cables all of which are twisted together, each of said component cables having an internal insulative layer and an insulative cable jacket as its outer surface;

a means for adhering each of said component cables to at least one other component cable; said means for adhering being arranged so that if a portion of a first cable is peeled from said adhesive element both:

said means for adhering separates from said portion of said first cable without damaging said jacket of said first cable; and
