Abstract

A bypass graft incorporates fixation mechanisms at its opposite ends, for securing these ends to different locations along a blood vessel, or alternatively to different locations wherein one of the locations is a different vessel or an organ defining a cavity. Mechanical fixation features such as collets or grommets can be employed, enhanced by delivery of an electrical current sufficient to heat surrounding tissue to form a thermal bond. A graft deployment system includes a tissue dilator and a needle for perforating tissue, mounted coaxially within the dilator. Intralumenal systems further include a catheter for containing the dilator.

Claims (22)

1. A process for deploying a bypass graft, comprising:

advancing a positioning device adjacent a wall of a host vessel, the positioning device having a distal end, a proximal end, and at least one magnet positioned near or at the distal end;

passing the distal end of the positioning device through an orifice defined in the host vessel wall;

advancing a bypass graft to the orifice, wherein the bypass graft is directed towards the orifice via a second magnet located along the host vessel wall and biased towards the at least one magnet; and,

securing a distal end of a bypass graft to the host vessel wall such that the bypass graft is in fluid communication with the host vessel through the orifice.

2. The process of claim 1 wherein the positioning device is advanced intralumenally towards the wall of the host vessel.

3. The process of claim 1 wherein the orifice defined in the host vessel wall is formed via a tissue perforating mechanism.

4. The process of claim 1 wherein the positioning device further comprises additional magnets positioned near or at the distal end.

5. The process of claim 1 wherein the bypass graft is advanced to the orifice via the positioning device.

6. The process of claim 1 wherein the positioning device comprises a tissue dilator.

7. The process of claim 1 wherein the orifice is formed through tissue of an organ defining a cavity.

8. An implantable anastomosis bypass graft system comprising:

a tubular graft having a length which defines a lumen therethrough, wherein a portion of the tubular graft is positionable at a location along a body lumen via a proximal attractive element;

a graft anchor attachable to the portion of the tubular graft, the graft anchor having a plurality of radially extending members for engagement with the body lumen;

a distal attractive element disposable along the body lumen and adapted to magnetically engage the proximal attractive element at the location along the body lumen such that the tubular graft is in fluid communication with the body lumen; and

a positioning device having a proximal end and a distal end, insertable by the distal end for intralumenal movement toward a selected site along the body lumen, wherein the proximal attractive element is located near the distal end of the positioning device.

9. The system of claim 8 further comprising a tissue perforating mechanism within the positioning device, positionable at a first location near the selected site and operable from the proximal end of the carrier to form a first opening through tissue at the first location, and further positionable at the location along the body lumen and operable to form an orifice through tissue at the location along the body lumen.

10. An implantable anastomosis bypass graft system comprising:

a positioning device comprising a proximal attractive element;

a tubular graft having a length which defines a lumen therethrough, wherein a portion of the tubular graft is positionable at a location along a body lumen via the proximal attractive element;

a graft anchor attachable to the portion of the tubular graft, the graft anchor having a plurality of radially extending members for engagement with the body lumen;

a distal attractive element disposable along the body lumen and adapted to magnetically engage the proximal attractive element at the location along the body lumen such that the tubular graft is in fluid communication with the body lumen, wherein the proximal attractive element is an electromagnet comprised of at least one conductive coil.
