Abstract

A method for analyzing management risk of a computer network includes selecting a portion of a storage system, determining a first downtime cost associated with a component included in the portion of the storage system, assigning the first downtime cost to the component, and disseminating the assigning of the downtime cost to a user.

Claims (46)

1. A method for analyzing management risk of a computer network comprises:

selecting a portion of a storage system;

determining, using a processor, a first cost associated with a component becoming unavailable included in the portion of the storage system;

associating the first cost to the component; and

disseminating the cost to a user in order to assess the cost of the system becoming unavailable;

wherein the component is one of a server and an application and the first cost is associated with the server or application becoming unavailable.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

determining a second cost associated with the component;

aggregating the first cost and the second cost;

associating the aggregate of the first cost and the second cost to the component; and

disseminating the aggregate cost to the user.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining a second cost associated with the component comprises:

initializing a cost variable associated with the component;

determining whether the component is in a data path associated with a host server; and

in response to a determination that the component is in a data path associated with a host server:

aggregating a downtime business cost of all host servers on one or more data paths with the component to the cost variable associated with the component.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

determining whether an application is in a data path associated with the component; and

in response to a determination that the an application is in a data path associated with a host server:

aggregating a downtime business cost of one or more applications executing on one or more host servers on one or more data paths with the component to the cost variable associated with the component.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the first cost has units of dollars per hour.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first cost is a default value.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein selecting the portion of the storage system includes the user selecting a representation of the portion of the storage system on a graphical user interface.

8. A non-transitory computer program product residing on a computer readable medium comprises instructions for analyzing management risk, the instructions cause a computer to:

select a portion of a storage system;

determine a first cost associated with a component becoming unavailable included in the portion of the storage system;

associate the first cost to the component; and

disseminate the first cost to a user in order to assess the cost of the system becoming unavailable;

wherein the component is one of a server and an application and the first cost is associated with the server or application becoming unavailable.

9. The computer program product of claim 8 further comprising instructions to cause a computer to:

determine a second cost associated with the component becoming unavailable;

aggregate the first cost and the second cost;

associate the aggregate of the first cost and the second cost to the component; and

disseminate the aggregate cost to the user.

10. The computer program product of claim 9 further comprising instructions to cause a computer to:

initialize a cost variable associated with the component;

determine whether the component is in a data path associated with a host server; and

in response to a determination that the component is in a data path associated with a host server:

aggregate a downtime business cost of all host servers on one or more data paths with the component to the cost variable associated with the component.

11. The computer program product of claim 10 further comprising instructions to cause a computer to:

determine whether an application is in a data path associated with the component; and

in response to a determination that the an application is in a data path associated with a host server:

aggregate a downtime business cost of one or more applications executing on one or more host servers on one or more data paths with the component to the cost variable associated with the component.

12. The computer program product of claim 8 wherein the first cost has units of dollars per hour.

13. The computer program product of claim 8 wherein the first cost is a default value.

14. The computer program product of claim 8 wherein selecting the portion of the storage system includes the user selecting a representation of the portion of the storage system on a graphical user interface.
