Abstract

A method for characterizing a data path in a computer system includes collecting data from a software application, the data represents a data path between the software application and a storage system, collecting data from the storage system, the data represents the data path between the software application and the storage system, selecting the data path between the software application and the storage system, and determining a characterization measure of the selected data path.

Claims (50)

1. A method for characterizing a data path comprising software, logical and physical data paths in a computer system, the method comprises:

collecting application level configuration data from a software application by an application level agent, the application level configuration data representing a software data path between the software application and a storage system;

collecting storage level configuration data from the storage system by a storage system level agent, the storage level configuration data representing a logical data path and a physical data path between the software application and the storage system; and

calculating, based at least in part on the application level configuration data and the storage level configuration data, a value associated with a characterization measure of the data path for measuring the effectiveness of the data path.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the value includes a performance measure for quantifying performance of the data paths.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the value includes an availability measure for determining the availability of the data path for passing data between the software application and the storage system.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the value includes a cost measure for determining the cost of passing data over the data path between the software application and the storage system.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the value includes a recoverability measure for determining the recoverability of data passed over the data path.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the value includes a security measure for determining the level of security of data passed over the data path.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

simulating a component inserted into the data path.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

simulating replacing a component in the data path.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

repeating collecting of the application level configuration data from the software application by the application level agent;

repeating collecting of the storage level configuration data from the storage system by the storage system level agent; and

repeating determining of the value to associate with the characterization measure of the data path.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the value is determined over a period of time.

11. A computer program product residing on a computer readable medium comprises instructions for characterizing a data path comprising software, logical and physical data paths in a computer system, the instructions cause a computer to:

collect application level configuration data from a software application by an application level agent, the application level configuration data representing a software data path between the software application and a storage system;

collect storage level configuration data from the storage system by a storage system level agent, the storage level configuration data representing a logical data path and a physical data path between the software application and the storage system; and

calculating, based at least in part on the application level configuration data and the storage level configuration data, a value associated with a characterization measure of the data path for measuring the effectiveness of the data path.

12. The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the value includes a performance measure for quantifying performance of the data path.

13. The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the value includes an availability measure for determining the availability of the data path for passing data between the software application and the storage system.

14. The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the value includes a cost measure for determining the cost of passing data over the data path between the software application and the storage system.

15. The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the value includes a recoverability measure for determining the recoverability of data passed over the data path.

16. The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the value includes a security measure for determining the level of security of data passed over the data path.

17. The computer program product of claim 11 further comprising instructions to cause the computer to:

simulate a component inserted into the data path.

18. The computer program product of claim 11 further comprising instructions to cause the computer to:

simulate replacing a component in the data path.

19. The computer program product of claim 11 further comprising instructions to cause the computer to:

repeat collecting of the application level configuration data from the software application by the application level agent;

repeat collecting of the storage level configuration data from the storage system by the storage system level agent; and

repeat determining of the value associated with the characterization measure of the data path.

20. The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the value is determined over a period of time.

21. A characterization process for characterizing a data path comprising software, logical and physical data paths in a computer system comprises:

an application level agent process that collects application level configuration data from a software application, the application level configuration data representing a software data path between the software application and a storage system;

a storage system level agent process data that collects storage level configuration data from the storage system, the storage level configuration representing the a logical data path and a physical data path between the software application and the storage system; and a process to determine, based at least in part on the application level configuration data and the storage level configuration data, a value associated with a characterization measure of the data path for measuring the effectiveness of the data path.

22. The characterization process of claim 21 wherein the value includes a performance measure for quantifying performance of the data path.

23. The characterization process of claim 21 wherein the value includes an availability measure for determining the availability of the data path for passing data between the software application and the storage system.

24. The characterization process of claim 21 wherein the value includes a cost measure for determining the cost of passing data over the data path between the software application and the storage system.

25. The characterization process of claim 21 wherein the value includes a recoverability measure for determining the recoverability of data passed over the data path.

26. The characterization process of claim 21 wherein the value includes a security measure for determining the level of security of data passed over the data path.

27. The characterization process of claim 21 further comprises:

a component insertion simulating process to simulate inserting a component in the data path.

28. The characterization process of claim 21 further comprises:

a component replacement simulating process to simulate replacing a component in the data path.

29. The characterization process of claim 21 wherein the application level agent process, the storage system level agent process, and the determining process repeat their functions.

30. The characterization process of claim 21 wherein the value is determined over a period of time.
