Fluid path control element for fluid processing module
View Patent ↗A fluid path control element which when stacked alternatively with a fluid porous sheet can be formed into a filtration module. The fluid path control element comprises a porous membrane having sealed to a portion of its periphery a thermoplastic element that extends into an opening either through the membrane or in an opening through the thermoplastic element. The portion of the thermoplastic element that extends into the opening can be heat sealed with a second thermoplastic element to prevent fluid flow between the opening and the membrane.
1. A filter construction element having at least one opening therein for a fluid inlet or a fluid outlet that consists essentially of:
a porous membrane sheet having at least one opening therein for a fluid inlet or a fluid outlet and,
a thermoplastic construction having a main body sealed to an edge of said membrane adjacent the at least one opening and having a top surface and a bottom surface that converge toward each other to form a tip area beyond the body, the tip area extending into the at least one opening, said thermoplastic construction being sized to permit said at least one opening to remain open and thereby to function as a fluid conduit or to seal said at least one opening to prevent fluid flow between said at least one opening and said membrane sheet.
2. The filter element of claim 1 wherein the top and bottom surfaces converge to form a tip area away from the edge of the membrane.
3. A filter construction element having at least one opening therein for a fluid inlet or a fluid outlet that consists essentially of:
a porous spacer sheet having at least one opening and,
a thermoplastic construction having a body, said body being sealed to an edge of said spacer sheet adjacent the at least one opening, said thermoplastic construction having a top and a bottom surface that converge toward each other to form a tip to the construction beyond the body which tip extends into the at least one opening, said thermoplastic construction being sized to permit said opening to remain open and thereby to function as a fluid conduit or to seal said opening to prevent fluid flow between said opening and said spacer sheet.
4. The filter construction element of claim 1 wherein the tip area controls the direction of flow of the thermoplastic of the tip area to selective areas of the element when heated.
5. The filter construction element of claim 3 wherein the tip area controls the direction of flow of the thermoplastic of the tip area to selective areas of the element when heated.
