Golf balls including a staged resin film and methods of making same
View Patent ↗The present invention is directed towards a golf ball wherein at least one portion of the golf ball is formed from a staged resin film that may contain fillers or additives to alter the physical or chemical characteristics of the ball, such as its weight distribution, its moment of inertia, and its moisture transmission properties. The invention also relates to methods of forming a golf ball having a portion formed from a staged resin film.
1. A method of making a golf ball comprising the steps of:
selecting a first staged resin film comprising at least one of a partially or totally blocked isocyanate, interpenetrating polymer network, or a ketimine bond derived from a ketone or an aldehyde and an amine having a branched carbon atom or a ring member carbon atom bond at the X-position; and
molding the first staged resin film to form an intermediate layer of the golf ball.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the staged resin film in the step of selecting is part of a laminate.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of molding the first staged resin film comprises forming a pre-molded shell.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of at least partially curing the portion of the golf ball that is formed from the staged resin film.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of molding at least one second staged resin film over the portion of the golf ball formed from the first staged resin film.
6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of including additional material to the staged resin film, wherein said additional material comprises an additive, filler, fiber, flake, particulate material, or mixture thereof.
7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of including additional material increases the specific gravity of the staged resin film.
8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of including additional material decreases the specific gravity of the staged resin film.
9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of forming a cover layer over the intermediate layer.
10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of forming a cover layer further comprises post-curing the golf ball.
11. A method of making a golf ball comprising the steps of:
selecting a first staged resin film comprising at least one of a partially or totally blocked isocyanate, interpenetrating polymer or a ketimine bond derived from a ketone or an aldehyde and an amine having a branched carbon atom or a ring member carbon atom bond at the X-position;
selecting a second material to combine with the first staged resin film to create a laminate;
molding the laminate to form a portion of the golf ball.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of molding the laminate comprises forming a pre-molded shell.
13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the step of at least partially curing the first staged resin film.
14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of selecting a second material comprises selecting a second staged resin film.
15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the step of including additional material to the first staged resin film, wherein said additional material comprises an additive, filler, fiber, flake, particulate material, or mixture thereof.
16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the step of including additional material changes the specific gravity of the first staged resin film.
17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the laminate has a thickness of about 6.35 mm or less.
