Abstract

A preferred route may be determined from an origin location to a destination location. The determination is made by processing directed links (e.g., one-way edges) in a graph that includes one or more links and two or more nodes. The determination of a preferred route may include an estimate of the time required at one or more intersections along alternative. Individual routing preferences, such as a preference of a rural over an urban route, also may be considered. Techniques are described that may help reduce the time required to identify a preferred route, including the identification and removal of no outlet routes before processing the directed links and techniques using particular data formats.

Claims (20)

1. A method for determining a recommended route from an origin to a destination using a computer-implemented routing system, the method comprising:

receiving a request for a route;

accessing, from within a computer-accessible memory and before determination of the route, mapping information that represents a network of roads;

accessing, before determination of the route, link information which includes entries identifying directed links included in a routing graph, each entry indicating a starting node of the directed link, an ending node of the directed link, a direction of travel associated with the directed link, and an indication of cost associated with traversing along the direction of travel of the directed link, the link information including:

a first directed link connecting a first node to a second node in a direction from the first node to the second node, and

a second directed link connecting the first node to the second node in a direction from the second node to the first node;

identifying, based on the accessed link information and before determination of the route, a subset of the directed links to be included in the a route from the origin to the destination along roads within the network of roads, the subset including either the first directed link in the direction from the first node to the second node or the second directed link in the direction from the second node to the first node, but not both the first and the second directed links; and

determining a recommended route that specifies driving maneuvers corresponding to the identified subset of directed links to traverse a path from the origin to the destination along roads within the network of roads.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein determining a recommended route comprises determining a recommended route from the origin to the destination by using node information for at least one node.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the node information includes one or more directed links that link to the node, the number of driveable links that link to from the node, and the total number of links that link to the node.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the routing system comprises a routing system provided through an Internet service provider.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the routing system and the user system use the same processor.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the recommended route is communicated over a connection that is established using the Internet.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer-implemented routing system is configured to cause a computer to receive at least one of an origin or a destination for which a route is to be determined.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein determining a recommended route comprises one or more of the following:

determining a recommended route from the origin to the destination by comparing the density of directed links in a first region of the routing graph to the density of directed links in a second region of the routing group;

determining a recommended route from the origin to the destination by applying a factor to a speed associated with a particular directed link based on the density of directed links in a region of the routing graph in which the particular directed link is located; or

determining a recommended route from the origin to the destination by using directed link information for at least one directed link.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the recommended route is either a recommended route for driving a vehicle from the origin to the destination or a recommended route for walking from the origin to the destination.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the first directed link connects the first and second nodes through a road and the second directed link connects the first and second nodes through the road.
