Abstract

The present invention includes a process for producing carbon filaments and synthesis gas from a mixture of alkanes, preferably natural gas, comprising converting a first portion of the alkanes, preferably C 2 + hydrocarbons, directly to carbon filaments and converting a second portion of the alkanes, preferably methane, to syngas. The natural gas may be separated into a first feed stream comprising ethane, propane, and butane and a second feed stream comprising methane. The first feed stream is fed to a carbon filament CF reactor to produce carbon filaments and hydrogen. The second feed stream is fed to a syngas production reactor to produce syngas. Alternatively, the natural gas is fed to at least one carbon filament reactor that is maintained at an effective temperature to convert C 2 + hydrocarbons in the natural gas to carbon filaments and hydrogen, thereby filtering methane from the natural gas.

Claims (7)

1. A process for filtering methane from natural gas comprising contacting natural gas with a metal catalyst under reaction conditions such that substantially all C 2+ hydrocarbons in the natural gas are converted to carbon filaments and hydrogen, with the remaining filtered natural gas consisting essentially of methane.

2. An integrated process for the conversion of natural gas to products, comprising:

(a) converting C 2+ hydrocarbons in the natural gas directly to carbon filaments by contact with a metal catalyst;

(b) converting methane in the natural gas to syngas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide, wherein the methane is removed from the natural gas by the conversion in step (a); and

(c) converting the syngas to products via post-processing of the syngas.

3. The process of claim 2 wherein the syngas is converted to hydrocarbon liquids via a Fischer-Tropsch reaction.

4. The process of claim 2 wherein the syngas is converted to alcohol via an alcohol synthesis reaction.
