Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for formulating a vaccine composition which comprises an anti-influenza vaccine, wherein the improvement of the vaccine composition is that the vaccine includes, as an additive, neuraminidase (NA). The base anti-influenza vaccine can be any commercially available anti-influenza vaccine. The improved composition can include and be administered with an adjuvant. The improved vaccine composition provides protection in a host, animal or human, against influenza infection, including viral replication and systemic infection.

Claims (16)

1. A method for formulating a vaccine composition which comprises an anti-influenza vaccine, wherein the improvement of the vaccine composition comprises having as an additive:

substantially pure, influenza neuraminidase protein and

wherein influenza hemagglutinin protein is also present in the composition,

comprising mixing the anti-influenza vaccine which comprises the influenza hemaglutinin, and the neuraminidase, wherein the neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.05 to 0.3 relative to the hemagglutinin protein present.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.15 to 0.3 relative to the hemagglutinin protein present.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the total neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.15 to 0.3 relative to the total hemagglutinin protein present.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.05 to about 0.15 relative to the hemagglutinin protein present.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the total neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.05 to about 0.15 relative to the total hemagglutinin protein present.

6. A method for formulating a vaccine composition which comprises an anti-influenza vaccine, wherein the improvement of the vaccine composition comprises having as an additive:

substantially pure, mature, glycosylated influenza hemagglutinin protein and said protein is immunogenic; and,

substantially pure, influenza neuraminidase,

comprising mixing the anti-influenza vaccine, the hemagglutinin, and the neuraminidase, wherein the neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.05 to 0.3 relative to the hemagglutinin protein present.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.15 to 0.3 relative to the hemagglutinin protein present.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the total neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.15 to 0.3 elative to the total hemagglutinin protein present.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.05 to about 0.15 relative to the hemagglutinin protein present.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the total neuraminidase protein is present in the composition at a molar ratio of from about 0.05 to about 0.15 relative to the total hemagglutinin protein present.
