Abstract

An improved method and apparatus is provided to secure a suture relative to body tissue. When a predetermined minimum force is being transmitted between a suture retainer and the body tissue, the suture is gripped with the suture retainer by plastically deforming material of the suture retainer. One or more bends may be formed in suture by the suture retainer to increase the holding action between the suture retainer and the suture. The bends in the suture may be formed by wrapping the suture around a portion of the suture retainer. During movement of the suture retainer toward the body tissue, the bends may be moved along the suture. One or more bends may be formed in the suture by bending a tubular member through which the suture extends. The tubular member may be maintained in a bent condition by a C-shaped holder member. Alternatively, the tubular member may be maintained in a bent condition by members which are latched together.

Claims (38)

1. A method of securing a suture relative to body tissue, said method comprises the steps of providing a retainer including first and second members, resiliently deflecting the first member from a first condition to a second condition, moving the first member into alignment with at least a portion of the second member while maintaining the first member in the first condition, thereafter, releasing the first member with a portion of the suture disposed between the first and second members, and gripping the portion of the suture with the first and second members by resiliently pressing the first member against the second member under the influence of resilience of material forming the first member.

2. A method as set forth in claim 1 further including the step of wrapping the suture around the first member, said step of releasing the first member being performed with the suture wrapped around the first member.

A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of resiliently deflecting the first member from a first condition to a second condition includes decreasing the size of the first member, said step of gripping a portion of the suture with the first and second members by resiliently pressing the first member against the second member includes increasing the size of the first member.

4. A method as set forth in claim 1 further including the step of tensioning the suture and transmitting a predetermined tree from the second member to the body tissue prior to performing said step of releasing the first member.

5. A method as set forth in claim 1 further including the step of forming a bend in the suture, said step of gripping the portion of the suture with the first and second members includes pressing the material of the first member against the bend in the suture.

6. A method of securing a suture relative to body tissue, comprising the steps of:

resiliently deflecting a first member from a first condition to a second condition;

forming a plurality of turns of the suture around a portion of the first member;

moving the first member into alignment with at least a portion of a second member while maintaining the first member in the first condition, thereafter;

releasing the first member with a portion of the suture disposed between the first and second members; and

gripping the portion of the suture with the first and second members by resiliently pressing the first member against the second member under the influence of resilience of material forming the first member.

A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of moving the first member into alignment with the second member includes moving the first member into an opening at least partially formed by a surface of the second member, said step of releasing the first member is performed while the first member is disposed in the opening formed by the surface of the second member, said step of gripping the suture with the first and second members includes pressing the suture against the surface of the second member.

A method of securing a suture, said method comprising the steps of providing a retainer including first and second members, wrapping a portion of a suture around the first member forming a plurality of turns of the suture around the first member, moving the first member and the plurality turns to position the first member relative to body tissue, and clamping the suture between the first member and the second member while the suture is wrapped around the first member.

9. A method as set forth in claim 8 wherein said step of clamping the suture between the first member and the second member includes positioning the first member in an opening which is at least partially defined by the second member.

10. A method as set forth in claim 8 wherein said step of clamping a portion of the suture between the first member and the second member includes expanding the first member.

11. A method as set forth in claim 8 further including the step of tensioning the suture with a predetermined force prior to performing said step of clamping a portion of the suture between the first member and the second member.

12. A method as set forth in claim 8 further including the step of moving the second member along the suture with the suture extending through an opening in the second member.

13. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein said step of clamping a portion of the suture between the first member and the second member includes moving the first member into the opening in the second member.

A method as set forth in claim 8 further including the step of resiliently deflecting the first member from a first condition to a second condition, said step of clamping a portion of the suture between the first member and the second member includes resiliently expanding the first member from the second condition toward the first condition.

15. A method as set forth in claim 8 further including the step of deforming at least one of the first and second members while clamping the suture between the first and second members.

A method as set forth in claim 15 wherein said step of deforming at least one of the first and second members is performed wit at least one of the first and second members at a temperature which is below a transition temperature of material forming at least one of said first and second members.

A method as set forth in claim 8 further including the step of plastically deforming the material of at least one of the first and second members while clamping the suture between the first and second members, said step of plastically deforming the material of at least one of the first and second members includes applying force against at least one of the first and second members and cold flowing material of at least one of the first and second members under the influence of force applied against at least one of the first and second members.

A method of securing a suture, comprising the steps of resiliently deflecting a first member from a first condition to a second condition, positioning the first and second members relative to each other with a portion of a suture disposed between the first and second members, and clamping the suture between the first and second members, said step of clamping the suture between the first and second members includes changing the condition of the first member from the second condition toward the first condition by reducing resilient deflection of the first member.

19. A method as set forth in claim 18 further including the step of wrapping a portion of the suture around one of the first and second members, said step of clamping the suture between the first and second members is performed with the suture wrapped around one of the first and second members.

20. A method as set forth in claim 19 further including the step of moving the one of the first and second members around which to suture is wrapped along the suture to position the one of the first and second members relative to body tissue.

21. A method as set forth in claim 17 wherein said step of changing the condition of the first member from the second condition toward the first condition is performed with a portion of the suture wrapped around one of the first and second members.

A method as set forth in claim 17 wherein said step of deflecting the first member from a first condition to a second condition includes applying force against first and second end portions of the first member and resiliently deflecting at least a portion of the first member under the influence of the Three applied against the first and second end portions of the first member.

23. A method as set forth in claim 18 wherein said step of deflecting a first member from a first condition to a second condition includes resiliently contracting the first member, said step of changing the condition of the first member from the second condition toward the first condition by reducing resilient deflection of the first member includes resiliently expanding the first member.

24. A method as set forth in claim 18 wherein said step of positioning the first and second members relative to each other includes positioning one of the first and second members in an opening in another of the first and second members.

25. A method as set forth in claim 18 further including the step of tensioning the suture with a predetermined force prior to performing said step of clamping the suture between the first and second members.

26. A method as set forth in claim 18 further including the step of moving one of the first and second members along the suture with the suture extending through an opening in the one member.

27. A method as set forth in claim 18 further including the step of deforming at least one of the first and second members while clamping the suture between the first and second members.

28. A method as set forth in claim 18 further including the step of plastically deforming the material of at least one of the first and second members while clamping the suture between the first and second members, said step of plastically deforming the material of at least one of the first and second members includes applying force against at least one of the first and second members and cold flowing material of at least one of the first and second members under the influence of a force applied against at least one of the first and second members.

29. A method of securing a suture comprising the steps of providing a retainer including first and second members, contracting the first member, positioning the first member in an opening in the second member with a suture extending through the opening in the second member, and expanding the first member while the first member is in the opening in the second member to clamp the suture between the first and second members.

30. A method as set forth in claim 29 further including the step of wrapping a portion of the suture around the first member, said step of positioning the first member in the opening in the second member is preformed with the suture wrapped around the first member.

31. A method as set forth in claim 29 wherein said step of contracting the first member includes applying force against first and second portions of the first member and resiliently deflecting the first member under the influence of the force applied against the first and second portions of the first member.

32. A method as set forth in claim 29 wherein said step of positioning the first member in an opening in the second member is performed while applying force against the first and second portions of the first member.

33. A method as set forth in claim 29 wherein said step of expanding the first member includes pressing first member against the suture and the second member with the first member in the opening in the second member.
