Abstract

A method for ultrasonic harmonic imaging is disclosed, which uses microbubbles particularly selected for their properties of reradiating ultrasound energy at frequencies other than the exciting frequency.

Claims (5)

1. A method of ultrasound harmonic imaging using ultrasonic energy transmitted by an ultrasonic source to an object or body to be imaged, comprising the steps of:

introducing into said object or body an ultrasound contrast agent, said ultrasound contrast agent comprising microbubbles having a membranes comprised of at least one non-Newtonian surfactant,

wherein said microbubbles are designed to produce enhanced harmonics and contain at least one gas osmotic agent selected from the group consisting of perfluorohexane, perfluoropentane, perfluorocyclopentane, Freon 113 (1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane), sulfur hexafluoride, cyclopentane, methylene chloride, hexane, pentane, perfluorobutane, perfluorocyclobutane, perfluropropane, Freon 12 (dichlorodifluoromethane), Freon 11 (trichloromonofluromethane), butane, cyclobutane, propane and ethane, and a modifier gas selected from the group consisting of perfluorohexane, perfluoropentane, perfluorocyclopentane, Freon 113 (1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane), sulfur hexafluoride, cyclopentane, methylene chloride, hexane, pentane, perfluorobutane, perfluorocyclobutane, perfluropropane, Freon 12 (dichlorodifluoromethane), Freon 11 (trichioromonofluromethane), butane, cyclobutane, propane and ethane which at least partially dissolves in the microbubble membrane when exposed to the peak pressure of the ultrasound wave, with the proviso that at least one gas osmotic agent is not the same as the modifier gas; and

detecting a frequency other than the transmitted ultrasonic frequency.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said membrane comprises a monolayer of surfactant.
