Abstract

The present invention provides a method for using processed cellulose. Preferably, the processed cellulose is a highly refined cellulose (HRC). The HRC is useful in a number of medical and nutritional applications. These medical and nutritional applications can include, but are not limited to, administering effective amounts of the HRC for lowering values of risk factor measurements for such diseases as arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Treatment of other diseases and conditions with the HRC is also possible.

Claims (34)

1. A method, comprising:

administering to a mammal an amount of a highly refined cellulose (HRC) effective to change at least one risk factor value for diabetes in the mammal, wherein the HRC is substantially indigestible and comprises a water retention capacity of greater than about 10 grams of water per gram of dry HRC, and wherein the amount of HRC comprises at least two grams dry weight of HRC per 1000 kilocalories consumed daily.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the HRC comprises no less than about 0.1 percent lignin by dry weight of HRC.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of HRC effective to change at least one risk factor is an amount effective to increase insulin sensitivity (S I ) of the mammal.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of HRC effective to change at least one risk factor is an amount effective to increase acute insulin response to glucose (AIRg) of the mammal.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of HRC effective to change at least one risk factor is an amount effective to increase a disposal index of the mammal.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the amount effective to increase a disposal index is an amount effective to change an AIRg value, an insulin sensitivity value, or a combination thereof, of the mammal.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein administering the effective amount of the HRC comprises administering at least about 5 grams of HRC within about a 24 hour interval to the mammal.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein administering further comprises administering the effective amount of HRC within about 30 minutes postprandially to the mammal.

9. A method, comprising:

administering to a mammal an amount of an HRC effective to increase insulin sensitivity of the mammal, wherein the HRC is substantially indigestible and comprises a water retention capacity of greater than about 10 grams of water per gram of dry HRC, and wherein the amount of HRC comprises at least two grams dry weight of HRC per 1000 kilocalories consumed daily.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the HRC comprises no less than about 0.1 percent lignin by dry weight of HRC.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein administering the effective amount of the HRC comprises administering at least about 5 grams of HRC within about a 24 hour interval to a mammal.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein administering further comprises administering the effective amount of HRC within about 30 minutes postprandially to the mammal.

13. A method, comprising:

administering to a mammal an amount of an HRC effective to increase a disposal index of the mammal, wherein the HRC is substantially indigestible and comprises a water retention capacity of greater than about 10 grams of water per to gram of dry HRC, and wherein the amount of HRC comprises at least two grams dry weight of HRC per 1000 kilocalories consumed daily.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the amount effective to increase a disposal index is an amount effective to change an AIRg value, an insulin sensitivity value, or a combination thereof, of the mammal.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein administering the effective amount of the HRC comprises administering at least about 5 grams of HRC within about a 24 hour interval to a mammal.

16. A method, comprising:

administering to a mammal an amount of a highly refined cellulose (HRC) effective to change at least one risk factor value for diabetes in the mammal, wherein the HRC is substantially indigestible and comprises a water retention capacity of greater than about 10 grams of water per gram of dry HRC, and wherein administering further comprises administering the effective amount of HRC within about 30 minutes postprandially to the mammal.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the HRC comprises no less than about 0.1 percent lignin by dry weight of HRC.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the amount of HRC effective to change at least one risk factor is an amount effective to increase insulin sensitivity (S I ) of the mammal.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the amount of HRC effective to change at least one risk factor is an amount effective to increase acute insulin response to glucose (AIRg) of the mammal.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the amount of HRC effective to change at least one risk factor is an amount effective to increase a disposal index of the mammal.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the amount effective to increase a disposal index is an amount effective to change an AIRg value, an insulin sensitivity value, or a combination thereof, of the mammal.

22. The method of claim 16 , wherein administering the effective amount of the HRC comprises administering at least about 5 grams of HRC within about a 24 hour interval to the mammal.

23. A method, comprising:

administering to a mammal an amount of an HRC effective to increase insulin sensitivity of the mammal, wherein the HRC is substantially indigestible and comprises a water retention capacity of greater than about 10 grams of water per gram of dry HRC, and wherein administering further comprises administering the effective amount of HRC within about 30 minutes postprandially to the mammal.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein the HRC comprises no less than about 0.1 percent lignin by dry weight of HRC.

25. The method of claim 23 , wherein administering the effective amount of the HRC comprises administering at least about 5 grams of HRC within about a 24 hour interval to a mammal.

26. A method, comprising:

administering to a mammal an amount of an HRC effective to increase a disposal index of the mammal, wherein the HRC is substantially indigestible and comprises a water retention capacity of greater than about 10 grams of water per to gram of dry HRC, and wherein administering further comprises administering the effective amount of HRC within about 30 minutes postprandially to the mammal.

27. The method of claim 26 , wherein the amount effective to increase a disposal index is an amount effective to change an AIRg value, an insulin sensitivity value, or a combination thereof, of the mammal.

28. The method of claim 26 , wherein administering the effective amount of the HRC comprises administering at least about 5 grams of HRC within about a 24 hour interval to a mammal.
