Abstract

A medical device which can be implanted at a target site in a living body. The device includes an inner flange formed by radial expansion of the device and an outer flange formed by axial compression of the device. The device can include an implant portion and a discard portion which separate from each other during formation of the outer flange. The separation can occur by fracturing a frangible linkage or by mechanically separating a portion of the outer flange from a deployment tool. The device can be a one piece anastomosis device for connecting a graft vessel to a target vessel without the use of conventional sutures. The inner and outer flanges capture the edges of an opening in a target vessel and secure the graft vessel to the opening in the target vessel. The device greatly increases the speed with which anastomosis can be performed over known suturing methods.

Claims (22)

1. An anastomosis device, comprising:

a first section; and

a second section connected to and separable from said first section, wherein said second section includes a plurality of spaced-apart members at its proximal end; wherein at least one of said members is rotatable relative to a remainder of said second section to release said second section from said first section; and wherein said second section and said first section are substantially coaxial.

2. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein at least one said section includes at least one breakable link connecting said section to the other said section.

3. The anastomosis device of claim 2 , wherein each said breakable link is configured to break upon application of a selected amount of force thereto.

4. The anastomosis device of claim 2 , wherein at least one said breakable link is positioned at a proximal end of said second section.

5. The anastomosis device of claim 2 , wherein at least one said breakable link is positioned at a distal end of said first section.

6. The anastomosis device of claim 2 , wherein at least one said breakable link is substantially U-shaped.

7. The anastomosis device of claim 2 , wherein at least one said breakable link is a reduced thickness area at the junction of said first section and said second section.

8. The anastomosis device of claim 2 , wherein at least one said breakable link is a hinge.

9. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein said first section is substantially radially symmetrical.

10. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of said second section is radially expandable.

11. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein said second section is substantially radially symmetrical.

12. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of barbs at the distal end of said second section.

13. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of members extending substantially axially from the distal end of said second section.

14. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of members extending from the distal end of said second section and spaced substantially evenly around the longitudinal centerline of said second section.

15. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first section and said second section is initially substantially cylindrical.

16. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein said first section and said second section are initially unitary.

17. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first section and said second section is fabricated from stainless steel.

18. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein at least one said member is rotatable about an axis other than the longitudinal centerline of said second section.

19. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein at least one said member is rotatable about an axis substantially parallel to the longitudinal centerline of said second section.

20. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein at least one said member is rotatable about an axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal centerline of said second section.
