Abstract

A method of protectively heating a microtitre well plate from below using infra-red radiation in a centrifugal evaporator, wherein a barrier plate is placed in contact with and surrounding the lower ends of the wells. The barrier plate is adapted to convey heat energy to the wells and contents thereof and is selected to be substantially non-transmittive of radiation having wavelengths in the range 200 nm to 3000 nm, and the surface of the barrier plate which is to receive the wells includes a plurality of sockets in which the closed lower ends of the wells are a snug fit. The plate is adapted to fit between the underside of the wells and a swinging sample holder mount of a centrifugal evaporator, or a shelf of a swinging sample holder mount, having two or more shelves for stacking well plates one above the other in such an evaporator. The plate is adapted to fit wholly within the envelope of the external wall of the well plate, and is dimensioned so that a gap exists between the external edge of the barrier plate and the interior of the external wall of the well plate and protrusions along some or all of the edges of the barrier plate engage the interior of the said external wall and frictionally hold the barrier plate in place.

Claims (9)

1. Heat transfer means for conveying infrared heat energy to a microtitre well plate which includes a plurality of wells, each well having an open end and a closed end comprising:

a body which is substantially non-transmissive of radiation having wavelengths in the range 200 nm to 3000 nm and includes upstanding castellations which define a plurality of cavities configured to receive the closed ends of the wells, with each cavity being defined by a group of castellations, and the castellations in each group defining respective segments of a common hemispherical concave surface.

2. Heat transfer means as claimed in claim 1 wherein each of the cavities is defined by four castellations.

3. Heat transfer means as claimed in claim 1 including a plate of thermally conductive material which is of generally uniform thickness.

4. Heat transfer means as claimed in claim 3 including peripheral edges and protrusions along some or all of said edges for engaging a microtitre well plate.

5. A centrifugal evaporator in combination with heat transfer means, the combination comprising:

heat transfer means as claimed in claim 1 , and a centrifugal evaporator, wherein the evaporator comprises an enclosure with a rotatable table therein, a swinging sample holder support means carried by the table configured to retain microtitre well plates therein, and infrared radiation heating means configured to heat the wells of each well plate via respective heat transfer means.

6. A method of protectively heating a microtitre well plate, the well plate including a plurality of wells, each well having an open end and a closed end, comprising the steps of:

placing the cavities of heat transfer means as claimed in claim 1 in contact with the closed ends of the wells of the well plate so that the cavities surround the closed ends, and heating the wells by directing infrared radiation towards the closed ends of the wells.
