Abstract

The present invention is directed to the provision of premixed aqueous compositions which are used to provide a paint composition of varying finish characteristics at the point of sale. Thus, the merchant distributing the paint composition made from the subject premixed compositions need only maintain inventory of four compositions. The particular compositions which are the subject of the invention exhibit stable characteristics during storage in their respective reservoirs. The compositions include a pigment composition, a dispersant thickening agent, a high resin content binder, and a low resin content binder. The compositions are combined in differing amounts to produce paint compositions being suitable for either interior or exterior use and having differing sheens, quality levels, and color bases.

Claims (17)

1. A method of producing an aqueous paint from a plurality of premixed aqueous compositions, said method comprising:

prompting a user, through a control program, to input a selection of paint that is well-suited for interior use or paint that is well-suited for exterior use, a desired sheen, a desired quality, and a desired color type, the input executable by a controller of an apparatus;

controlling the apparatus to produce the paint, the paint having the desired sheen, the desired quality, and the desired paint being well-suited for the desired color type and for either interior or exterior use as desired;

producing the paint from a plurality of premixed aqueous compositions, said compositions comprising a pigment composition and compositions selected from the group consisting of a dispersant-thickening agent, a high resin content binder, a low resin content binder, and mixtures thereof; and

simultaneously or sequentially mixing the pigment composition with at least one of the other compositions wherein the pigment composition includes titanium dioxide in the range of 40 to 50 percent, water of about 25 percent, a mixture of clay and silica of about 15 percent, a viscosity controlling agent of about 10 percent, and a combination of dispersant and thickener in an amount of less than 5 percent, said percentages being based on weight of the pigment composition.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said combination of dispersant and thickener in said pigment composition includes a phosphate-based dispersant.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said phosphate-based dispersant is potassium tri poly phosphate.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising prompting the user to select the desired sheen from a plurality of sheens, the plurality of sheens comprising flat, low sheen, egg shell, semi gloss, and high gloss if the user selects interior use, and the plurality of sheens comprising flat, low sheen, satin, semi gloss, and high gloss if the user selects exterior use.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising prompting the user to select the desired color type from a plurality of color types, the plurality of color types comprising white, pastel, tinting, deep tone, and neutral.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising prompting the user to select the desired quality from a plurality of qualities, the plurality of qualities comprising retail, professional, and economy.

7. A program product, tangibly embodying a program of machine-readable instructions executable by a controller of an apparatus, the program product comprising:

a control program prompting a user to input into the apparatus an indication of a desired paint finish for an aqueous paint composition, the control program further controlling the apparatus to produce the aqueous paint composition having the desired paint finish;

the apparatus producing the aqueous paint composition having the desired paint finish from a plurality of premixed aqueous compositions, said compositions comprising a pigment composition and compositions selected from the group consisting of a dispersant-thickening agent, a high resin content binder, a low resin content binder, and mixtures thereof, said apparatus simultaneously or sequentially mixing the pigment composition with at least one of the other compositions under program control, wherein the pigment composition includes titanium dioxide in the range of 40 to 50 percent, water of about 25 percent, a mixture of clay and silica of about 15 percent, a viscosity controlling agent of about 10 percent, and a combination of dispersant and thickener in an amount of less than 5 percent, said percentages being based on weight of the pigment composition; and

signal bearing media bearing the control program.

8. The program product of claim 7 , wherein the signal bearing media comprises transmission media.

9. The program product of claim 8 , wherein the signal bearing media comprises recordable media.

10. The program product of claim 8 , wherein the control program prompts the user to select the desired paint finish from a plurality of sheens, the plurality of sheens comprising at least three of flat, low sheen, egg shell, satin, semi gloss, and high gloss.
