Abstract

An asset, object, person or animal monitoring system and associated method for monitoring assets, objects, people or animals utilizing impulse radio techniques. The asset, object, person or animal monitoring system of the present invention can vary the duty cycles of the impulse radio transmitters, by both manual and automatic means, to adapt to varied requirements.

Claims (30)

1. A monitoring system comprising:

a sensor capable of monitoring a value of a parameter related to one of an asset, an object, a person, or an animal; and

an ultra wideband impulse radio capable of interfacing with said sensor and further capable of periodically transmitting impulse radio signals conveying information related to said parameter during transmission intervals that are spaced apart in accordance with a predetermined duty cycle.

2. The monitoring system of claim 1 , further comprising a second ultra wideband impulse radio capable of receiving at least one of said impulse radio signals during one of said transmission intervals by locking onto said at least one of said impulse radio signals during one of said transmission intervals.

3. The monitoring system of claim 2 , further comprising a control station that includes a display capable of displaying at least a portion of said received information.

4. The monitoring system of claim 2 , further comprising a control station that includes a storage device capable of storing at least a portion of said received information.

5. The monitoring system of claim 2 , further comprising a control station that includes a processor capable of processing at least a portion of said received information.

6. The monitoring system of claim 2 , further comprising a control station that includes a warning system capable of initiating an alarm when a condition of said parameter within said received information falls outside of an acceptable range.

7. The monitoring system of claim 6 , wherein said warning system includes a communications link with an emergency services dispatcher.

8. The monitoring system of claim 7 , wherein said emergency services dispatcher is a 911 dispatcher.

9. The monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein said object is a structure and said parameter relates to pressure, temperature, humidity, volume or radioactivity of one content within the structure.

10. A method for monitoring sensor information, said method comprising the steps of:

interfacing an ultra wideband impulse radio to a sensor;

monitoring a value of a parameter related to one of an asset, an object, a person, or an animal using said sensor; and

using said ultra wideband impulse radio to periodically transmit impulse radio signals containing information related to said parameter during transmission intervals that are spaced apart in accordance with a predetermined duty cycle.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising the step of using a second ultra wideband impulse radio to receive at least one of said impulse radio signals during one of said transmission intervals by locking onto said at least one of said impulse radio signals during one of said transmission intervals.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the steps of processing, storing and displaying at least a portion of said received information.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the step of initiating an alarm when a condition of said parameter within said received information falls outside of an acceptable range.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the step of establishing a communication link with an emergency services dispatcher when a condition of said received information falls outside of an acceptable range.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein said object is a structure and said parameter relates to pressure, temperature, humidity, volume or radioactivity of one content within the structure.

16. A monitoring system comprising:

a sensor capable of monitoring a value of a parameter related to one of an asset, an object, a person, or an animal;

a first ultra wideband impulse radio capable of interfacing with said sensor and further capable of periodically transmitting impulse radio signals conveying information related to said parameter during transmission intervals that are spaced apart in accordance with a predetermined duty cycle; and

a control station including:

a second ultra wideband impulse radio capable of receiving at least one of said impulse radio signals during one of said transmission intervals by locking onto said at least one of said impulse radio signals during one of said transmission intervals;

a processor capable of processing at least a portion of said received information;

a storage device capable of storing at least a portion of said received information; and

a display capable of displaying at least a portion of said received information.

17. The monitoring system of claim 16 , wherein said control station includes a warning system capable of initiating an alarm when a condition of said received information falls outside of an acceptable range.

18. The monitoring system of claim 16 , wherein said object is a structure and said parameter relates to pressure, temperature, humidity, volume or radioactivity of one content within the structure.
