Abstract

An expandable stent for percutaneous procedures comprises a tubular structure disposed about a longitudinal axis and a plurality of fingers. The plurality of fingers, upon expansion of the stent, extends from the tubular structure about a second longitudinal axis which is angularly offset from the first longitudinal axis. At least one of the plurality of fingers has a length that is greater than that of the other fingers.

Claims (16)

1. A stent comprising:

a tubular structure having a first end and a second end, the tubular structure being disposed about a first longitudinal axis and having an expanded state and unexpanded state, a portion of the tubular structure defining a side opening, the side opening being substantially ring-shaped in the expanded state, the side opening having a perimeter and being located between the first end and the second end of the tubular structure, the perimeter having a first end and a second end;

a first plurality of fingers extending from a first portion of the perimeter, each finger of the first plurality of fingers having a length, each finger of the first plurality of fingers extending from the tubular structure about a second longitudinal axis upon expansion of the stent, the second longitudinal axis being nonparallel to the first longitudinal axis, wherein successive fingers of the first plurality of fingers are of increasing length, the finger closest to the first end of the perimeter being shorter than the finger closest to the second end of the perimeter.

2. The stent of claim 1 having an outer surface defining a cylindrical plane wherein in an unexpanded state the fingers lie substantially within the cylindrical plane.

3. The stent of claim 1 wherein each of the fingers has a length less than 10.0 mm.

4. The stent of claim 1 wherein the stent is self-expanding.

5. The stent of claim 1 wherein the stent is balloon expandable.

6. The stent of claim 1 wherein all but at least one of the plurality of fingers are each adjacent to a finger having a smaller length and are adjacent to a finger having a longer length.

7. The stent of claim 1 wherein the plurality of fingers on the stent contains 2 to 25 fingers.

8. A stent comprising:

a tubular structure having an expanded state and an unexpanded state and a proximal end and a distal end, the tubular structure being disposed about a first longitudinal axis and having an expanded state and unexpanded state, a portion of the tubular structure defining a side opening, the side opening being substantially ring-shaped in the expanded state, the side opening having a perimeter and being located between the proximal end and the distal end of the tubular structure;

a first plurality of fingers and a second plurality of fingers,

wherein in the unexpanded state, the first plurality of fingers extend distally in a substantially longitudinal direction from a first portion of the perimeter, each finger of the first plurality of fingers having a length, wherein successive fingers of the first plurality of fingers are of increasing length until a first maximum length is reached whereupon successive fingers of the first plurality are of decreasing length, and

wherein in the unexpanded state, the second plurality of fingers extend proximally in a substantially longitudinal direction from a second portion of the perimeter, each finger of the second plurality of fingers having a length, wherein successive fingers of the second plurality of fingers are of increasing length until a second maximum length is reached whereupon successive fingers of the second plurality are of decreasing length, the first maximum length being greater than second maximum length, and

wherein in the expanded state, each finger of the first plurality of fingers and the second plurality of fingers extends from the tubular structure about a second longitudinal axis, the second longitudinal axis being nonparallel to the first longitudinal axis.

9. The stent of claim 8 , wherein each finger of the first plurality of fingers and the second plurality of fingers has a peak, and wherein in the unexpanded state the peaks of the first plurality of fingers are substantially aligned with each other about the circumference of the stent and the peaks of the second plurality of fingers are substantially aligned with each other about the circumference of the stent.
