Abstract

A hand-held electronic device having a remote control application user interface that functions to displays operational mode information to a user. The graphical user interface may be used, for example, to setup the remote control application to control appliances for one or more users in one or more rooms, to perform activities, and to access favorites. The remote control application is also adapted to be upgradeable. Furthermore, the remote control application provides for the sharing of operational mode information.

Claims (6)

1. An electronically readable media having embedded instructions executable by a processing device of a hand held device for displaying information to a user of the hand held device, the instructions performing steps comprising:

allowing a plurality of lists of favorite channels to be defined for display in a display of the hand held device; and

accepting input into the hand held device that specifies to the hand held device that the hand held device is to placed into a mode to control at least one of a plurality of home appliances and, in response, using the input to select at least one of the plurality of lists of favorite channels whereby the user may interact with the at least one of the plurality of lists when displayed in the display of the hand held device to cause the hand held device to transmit one or more command codes to the at least one of the plurality of home appliances associated with the specified mode for the purpose of tuning the at least one of the plurality of home appliances to a channel represented on the at least one of the plurality of lists of favorite channels.

The readable media as recited in claim 1 , further comprising instructions for monitoring at the hand held device user input to gather information indicative of frequency with which the hand held device is used to transmit one or more command codes to tune one or more of the plurality of home appliances to a channel represented on one or more of the lists of favorite channels and using the information to provide an order to each of the plurality of lists of favorite channels when each of the plurality of lists of favorite channels is displayed in the display of the hand held device.

3. The readable media as recited in claim 2 , wherein the order provided to the list of favorite channels is also day of the week dependent.

4. The readable media as recited in claim 2 , wherein the order provided to the list of favorites is also time of day dependent.
