Abstract

A sensing device for sensing region identity data and generating movement data when the sensing device is moved relative to a region of a surface, the region identity data being indicative of an identity of the region, the movement data being indicative of the movement of the sensing device relative to the region, the surface having disposed upon it coded data indicative of at least one region associated with the surface, the sensing device including: region identity sensing means configured to sense the region identity data using at least some of the coded data; motion sensing means configured to generate the movement data; and communications means configured to communicate the region identity data and the movement data to a computer system.

Claims (41)

1. A sensing device for sensing region identity data and generating at least one of movement data and position data when the sensing device is moved relative to a region of a surface, the region identity data being indicative of an identity of the region, the movement data being indicative of the movement of the sensing device relative to the region, the position data being indicative of the position of the sensing device relative to the region, the surface having disposed upon it coded data indicative of at least one region associated with the surface, the coded data comprising a plurality of substantially undifferentiated marks positioned relative to a set of predetermined nominal mark positions and the sensing device including:

a region identity sensor configured to sense the region identity data using at least some of the coded data;

a motion sensor configured to generate at least one of the movement data and the position data using at least some of the coded data; and

a communicator configured to communicate the region identity data and at least one of the movement data and die position data to a computer system, wherein any 10 millimeter diameter subregion of die region includes sufficient coded data to identify the region.

2. A sensing device according to claim 1 , wherein the motion sensor is configured to generate at least one of the movement data and the position data using at least some of the coded data.

A sensing device according to claim 2 , wherein the coded data is also indicative of a plurality of reference points of the region, the motion sensor being configured to generate at least one of the movement data and the position data on the basis of at least one of the movement and position of the sensing device relative to at least one of the reference points.

4. A sensing device according to claim 3 , wherein the coded value represented by a mark is at least partially determined by the position of the mark relative to the set of predetermined nominal mark positions.

5. A sensing device according to claim 1 , wherein each mark represents one of a plurality of coded values.

6. A sensing device according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined nominal mark positions are arranged relative to a plurality of nominal lines.

7. A sensing device according to claim 1 , wherein the marks have centers and wherein the relative spacing of the centers of at least one pair of adjacent marks is less than 12 millimeters.

8. A sensing device according to claim 1 , wherein each mark has a minimum radius and a maximum radius and wherein the length of a mark's minimum radius is greater than 40% of the length of that mark's maximum radius.

9. A sensing device according to claim 3 , wherein any 10 millimeter diameter subregion of the region includes sufficient information to identify at least one reference point of the region.

10. A sensing device according to claim 1 , the region corresponding substantially to the surface.

11. A sensing device according to claim 1 , the region corresponding substantially the zone of an interactive element.

A sensing device for sensing region identity data and generating at least one of movement data and position data when the sensing device is moved relative to a region of a surface, the region identity data being indicative of an identity of the region, the movement data being indicative of the movement of the sensing device relative to the region, the position data being indicative of the position of the sensing device relative to the region, the surface having disposed upon it coded data indicative of at least one region associated with the surface, the coded data comprising a plurality of substantially undifferentiated marks positioned relative to a set of predetermined nominal mark positions and the sensing device including:

a region identity sensor configured to sense the region identity data using at least some of the coded data;

a motion sensor configured to generate at least one of the movement data and the position data using at least some of the coded data; and

a communicator configured to communicate the region identity data and at least one of the movement data and the position data to a computer system, wherein the coded data is also indicative of a plurality of reference points of the region, the motion sensor being configured to generate at least one of the movement data and the position data on the basis of at least one of the movement and position of the sensing device relative to at least one of the reference points, and wherein any 10 millimeter diameter subregion of the region includes sufficient information to identify at least one reference point of the region.

13. A sensing device according to claim 12 , wherein each mark represents one of a plurality of coded values.

14. A sensing device according to claim 13 , wherein the coded value represented by a mark is at least partially determined by the position of the mark relative to the set of predetermined nominal mark positions.

15. A sensing device according to claim 12 , wherein the predetermined nominal mark positions are arranged relative to a plurality of nominal lines.

16. A sensing device according to claim 12 , wherein the marks have centers and wherein the relative spacing of the centers of at least one pair of adjacent marks is less than 12 millimeters.

17. A sensing device according to claim 12 , wherein each mark has a minimum radius and a maximum radius and wherein the length of a mark's minimum radius is greater than 40% of the length of that mark's maximum radius.

18. A sensing device according to claim 12 , wherein any 10 millimeter diameter subregion of the region includes sufficient coded data to identify the region.

19. A sensing device according to claim 12 , the region corresponding substantially to the surface.

20. A sensing device according to claim 12 , the region corresponding substantially to the zone of an interactive element.

21. A sensing device for sensing region identity data and generating movement data when the sensing device is moved relative to a region of a surface, the region identity data being indicative of an identity of the region, the movement data being indicative of the movement of the sensing device relative to the region, the surface having disposed upon it coded data indicative of at least one region associated with the surface, the coded data comprising a plurality of substantially undifferentiated marks positioned relative to a set of predetermined nominal mark positions and the sensing device including:

a sensor configured to sense at least some of the coded data, the sensor being configured to use the sensed coded data to:

generate the region identity data;

generate the movement data; and,

a communicator configured to communicate the region identity data and at least one of the movement data and the position data to a computer system.

22. A sensing device according to claim 21 , wherein the coded data is also indicative of a plurality of reference points of the region, the sensor being configured to generate the movement data on the basis of movement of the sensing device relative to at least one of the reference points.

23. A sensing device according to claim 22 , wherein any 10 millimeter diameter subregion of the region includes sufficient information to identify at least one reference point of the region.

24. A sensing device according to claim 21 , wherein each mark represents one of a plurality of coded values.

25. A sensing device according to claim 24 , wherein the coded value represented by a mark is at least partially determined by the position of the mark relative to the set of predetermined nominal mark positions.

26. A sensing device according to claim 21 , wherein the predetermined nominal mark positions are arranged relative to a plurality of nominal lines.

27. A sensing device according to claim 21 , wherein the marks have centers and wherein the relative spacing of the centers of at least one pair of adjacent marks is less than 12 millimeters.

28. A sensing device according to claim 21 , wherein each mark has a minimum radius and a maximum radius and wherein the length of a mark's minimum radius is greater than 40% of the length of that mark's maximum radius.

29. A sensing device according to claim 21 , wherein any 10 millimeter diameter subregion of the region includes sufficient coded data to identify the region.

30. A sensing device according to claim 21 , the region corresponding substantially to the surface.

31. A sensing device according to claim 21 , the region corresponding substantially to the zone of an interactive element.
