Abstract

A device for monitoring movement of shipped goods and a related improvement include a detector for generating a signal in response to movement of the device during shipping when associated with the goods. A processor processes the signal to generate one or more movement events, and time-tags the movement events with time of occurrence information from a clock. A GPS chip locates the device, data from the GPS chip providing location information of where each of the movement events occurred. A first communications port communicates each movement event, tagged with the time of occurrence information and location information, to a receiver remote from the device.

Claims (45)

1. A device for monitoring movement of shipped goods, comprising:

a detector for generating a signal in response to movement of the device during shipping when associated with the goods;

a clock;

a processor for processing the signal to generate one or more movement events and for time-tagging the movement events with time of occurrence information from the clock;

a GPS chip for locating the device, data from the GPS chip providing location information of where each of the movement events occurred; and

a first communications port for communicating each movement event, tagged with the time of occurrence information and location information, to a receiver remote from the device.

2. The device of claim 1 , the detector comprising a pressure sensor, wherein the processor processes pressure signals from the pressure sensor to determine altitude variation over a preselected time interval.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the processor processes pressure signals from the pressure sensor to determine drop distance based upon variations in the pressure signals occurring within about ½second to 5 seconds.

4. The device of claim 1 , the

detector including a magnetorestrictive element for generating a signal in response to movement of the device.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first communication port transmits data to the receiver at preselected time intervals.

6. The device of claim 5 , the preselected time intervals comprising one of 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds, 40 seconds, 50 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 5 hours, 6 hours, 7 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, 6 days and 7 days.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first communications port transmits data to the receiver substantially continuously, wherein data substantially corresponds to real-time signals from the detector.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first communications port transmits events to the receiver in one of two modes: by event transmission and by timed sequence transmissions.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first communication port transmits the time-tagged data to the receiver when the movement event exceeds a predetermined threshold.

10. The device of claim 9 , the remote receiver comprising a computer for receiving the time-tagged movement event and for processing the movement event with one or both of the GPS data and a shipping schedule, to determine a party responsible for the goods when the movement event exceeded the predetermined threshold.

11. The device of claim 9 , the detector comprising an accelerometer, the predetermined threshold selected from the group of a number of g's, a drop distance, an airtime and a jerk variation.

12. The device of claim 9 , the detector comprising:

a fastener for attaching with (a) the goods within a package or (b) a package containing the goods; and

a spin sensor, the predetermined threshold comprising a degree of rotation of the goods or the package containing the goods.

13. The device of claim 1 , the movement event selected from the group of an airtime event, a dropping event, a spin event and a flip-over event.

14. The device of claim 13 , the dropping event comprising one or both of a drop distance of the goods and an impact of the goods.

15. The device of claim 14 , the detector configured for association with the goods by attaching with (a) the goods within a package or (b) a package containing the goods, the detector comprising:

an accelerometer for generating a signal responsive to acceleration of the device and the goods or the package containing the goods, when the device is attached with the goods or the package, respectively, the processor processing the acceleration signal to determine one or both of the drop distance and the impact.

16. The device of claim 1 , the detector configured for attaching to a package containing the goods.

17. The device of claim 1 , the detector configured for attaching to the goods within a package.

18. The device of claim 1 , the detector configured for detecting movement of the device exceeding a predetermined movement threshold and for generating the signal in response to above-threshold movement.

19. The device of claim 18 , the processor processing the signal to generate and time-tag one or more above-threshold movement events.

20. The device of claim 19 , the remote receiver comprising a computer for receiving the time-tagged threshold event and processing the threshold event with one or both of the GPS data and a shipping schedule, to determine a party responsible for the goods during the threshold event.

21. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an environmental sensor for generating a signal indicative of an environmental condition, the processor processing the signal to determine and time-tag the environmental condition.

22. The device of claim 21 , the environmental condition comprising humidity or temperature.

23. The device of claim 1 , wherein the remote receiver comprises one of a cell phone, a pager, a PDA, a computer and a watch.

24. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first communications port communicates the events to the receiver substantially continuously, the receiver having a second communications port for receiving the events and for reconstructing the substantially continuous events to generate media signals suitable for display with broadcast media.

25. The device of claim 24 , wherein the receiver communicates the media signals to one of Television and the Internet.

26. The device of claim 1 , the port wirelessly communicating the time-tagged events to the remote receiver.

27. The device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one adhesive strip for attaching the device to an object.

28. The device of claim 27 , further comprising a piezoelectric element associated with the strip, the processor detecting when the adhesive strip is removed from the object by movement of the piezoelectric element.

29. The device of claim 1 , wherein the time of occurrence information includes a date of occurrence.
