Abstract

An improved air pulse generator produces high frequency chest wall oscillations (HFCWO) and has an improved air pulse generator. The air pulse module has a reduced size and improved shape for ease of use by a patient.

Claims (33)

1. An air pulse generator for use with an inflatable garment, the air pulse generator comprising:

an air chamber shell defining an air chamber, the air chamber shell having an air port in communication with the air chamber and the inflatable garment, the air chamber shell having a blower inlet spaced from the air port and in communication with the air chamber,

a blower in communication with the blower inlet to pressurize and maintain the air chamber above atmospheric pressure; and

first and second diaphragms which move toward and away from each other in a cyclical manner to produce oscillating pressure within the air chamber, said air chamber is located between the first and second diaphragms, the blower inlet being located between the first and second diaphragms and in communication with the air chamber located between the first and second diaphragms, wherein the first and second diaphragms move generally along an axis toward and away from each other, and the blower is coupled to the air chamber shell such that the axis passes through the blower.

2. The air pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein the air chamber shell defines first and second opposed diapragm openings, and the first and second diaphrams are positioned over the respective first and second diaphragm openings.

3. The air pulse generator of claim 2 , wherein each diaphragm includes a diaphragm plate and a diaphragm seal interposed between the diaphragm plate and a wall defining the associated diaphragm opening in the air chamber shell.

4. The air pulse generator of claim 3 , wherein each diaphragm seal fonna a fluid-tight seal between the diaphragm plate and the wall defining the associated diaphragm opening.

5. The air pulse generator of claim 3 , wherein each diaphragm plate is generally circular, and each diaphragm seal is generally annular.

6. The air pulse generator of claim 3 , wherein each diaphragm seal has a u-shaped cross section.

7. The air pulse generator of claim 3 , wherein each diaphragm plate has a portion that tips inwardly and outwardly as it reciprocates in and out of the associated diaphragm opening.

8. The air pulse generator of claim 3 , wherein each diaphragm plate is substantially flat.

9. The air pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein the first and second diaphragms are substantially parallel to each other.

10. The air pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein the air chamber shell is comprised of a first portion and a second portion coupled to the first portion along a seam to define the air chamber, the first portion is comprised of plastic, the second portion is comprised of metal, the first portion has both the blower inlet and the air port, and the second portion has a motor-mounting opening.

11. The air pulse generator of claim 1 , further comprising a motor operable to move the diaphragms toward and away from each other.

12. The air pulse generator of claim 11 , wherein the air chamber shell is comprised of a first portion and a second portion coupled to the first portion along a seam to define the air chamber, wherein the second portion has an opening in which a portion of the motor is received.

13. The air pulse generator of claim 12 , wherein the second portion is comprised of metal.

14. The air pulse generator of claim 12 , wherein the first portion is comprised of plastic.

15. The air pulse generator of claim 12 , wherein the first portion has both the blower inlet and the air port.

16. The air pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein the air chamber shell includes at least one curvilinear wall portion disposed between the opposed diaphragms.

17. The air pulse generator of claim 16 , wherein the at least one curvilinear wall portion has a substantially parabolic shape.

18. The air pulse generator of claim 16 , wherein the at least one curvilinear wall portion has a substantially circular shape.

an air pulse module including the air chamber shell defining an air chamber, the air chamber shell being received in the interior region of the housing, and a portion of the display panel occupying a space in the interior region of the housing between the housing and the shell, and

a control board operably coupled to the display panel and located in the interior region of the housing between the display panel and the shell.

19. The air pulse generator of claim 1 further comprising:

a housing defining an interior region,

a display panel,

an air pulse assembly including air chamber shell defining an air chamber, the air chamber shell being received in the interior region of the housing, and a portion of the display panel occupying a space in the interior region of the housing between the housing and the shell, and

a control board operably coupled to the display panel and located in the interior region of the housing between the display panel and the shell.

20. The air pulse generator of claim 19 , wherein the air pulse module is configured to produce oscillating pressure in a plurality of operating modes, and the display shows the status of the air pulse module and the options available to a user.

21. The air pulse generator of claim 19 , wherein the air pulse module includes a blower and the shell includes a blower inlet coupled to the blower.

22. The air pulse generator of claim 21 , wherein the blower is situated in the interior region and outside the air chamber.

23. The air pulse generator of claim 19 , wherein the housing includes at least one air opening, and the shell includes at least one air port coupled to the at least one air opening.

24. The air pulse generator of claim 19 , wherein the air pulse module includes a motor and the shell includes an opening in which a portion of the motor is received.
