Abstract

An apparatus for treating a patient. The apparatus includes a catheter having a distal end and a proximal end. The distal end has an orifice through which a fluid can flow. The distal end has a port through which the fluid can flow. The port is adjacent to but apart from the orifice. The apparatus includes a mechanism for controlling the size of the port that is open. The controlling mechanism is disposed over the port and able to close the port. An apparatus for treating a patient. The apparatus includes a catheter having a proximal end and a distal end having an orifice through which a fluid can flow. The distal end has an end marker disposed about the orifice which appears in an image of an imaging device. An apparatus for treating a patient. The apparatus includes a catheter having a proximal end and a distal end having an orifice through which fluid can flow. The catheter has an axis. The distal end has a plurality of holes having an elongate shape disposed essentially in parallel with the axis of the catheter with smooth edges so blood cells are not damaged as they pass through the holes. A method for treating a patient. The method includes the steps of inserting a catheter in a vessel. Then there is the step of opening a port in the catheter disposed adjacent an orifice in the distal end of the catheter so blood can flow through the port and the orifice.

Claims (14)

1. An apparatus for treating a patient comprising:

a catheter having a distal end and a proximal end, said distal end having an orifice through which a fluid can flow, said distal end having a port through which the fluid can flow, said port adjacent to but apart from said orifice; and

a mechanism for controlling the size of the port that is open, said controlling mechanism disposed over the port and able to close the port, the controlling mechanism includes a panel and a mechanism for moving the panel, said panel in movable relationship with the moving mechanism, said moving mechanism contacting the catheter and disposed about the port so said panel can be moved by the moving mechanism to control the size of the port that is open, the controlling mechanism includes a frame contacting the catheter and positioned about the port, said panel disposed in said frame.

2. An apparatus as described in claim 1 wherein the controlling mechanism is able to fluidically seal the port.

3. An apparatus as described in claim 2 wherein the controlling mechanism includes a panel wire connected to the panel and extending along the catheter, movement of the panel wire causing said panel to move.

4. An apparatus as described in claim 3 wherein said distal end has holes through which fluid can flow disposed between the orifice and the port, said holes having an elongate shape and disposed essentially in parallel with the axis of the catheter.

5. An apparatus as described in claim 4 wherein said distal end having an end marker disposed about the orifice.

6. An apparatus as described in claim 5 wherein said distal end having a second marker disposed between the port and the holes.

7. An apparatus as described in claim 6 wherein said panel having a front end and a back end, said panel having a first marker disposed at the front end.

8. An apparatus as described in claim 7 wherein said port having a front and a back, said distal end having a front port marker disposed at the front of the port.

9. An apparatus as described in claim 8 including a stop disposed about the distal end which prevents the distal end from puncturing an atrium wall.

10. An apparatus as described in claim 9 wherein the stop has an expanded state and a compact state.

11. An apparatus as described in claim 10 wherein the stop includes a balloon disposed about the distal end and an inflation tube which extends from the balloon along the catheter.

12. An apparatus as described in claim 11 wherein the moving mechanism includes a wheel hub disposed at the proximal end and connected to the wire which moves the wire when it is moved.
