Abstract

A process for making a golf ball with one or more deep dimples is disclosed. The process utilizes a molding assembly for making a golf ball which includes a mold body that defines a molding cavity. The molding cavity is adapted to accommodate and preferably retain a golf ball core during a molding operation of one or more layers about the core. The molding assembly includes at least one material flow inlet, at least one material flow channel extending between and providing fluid communication with the material flow inlet and the molding cavity. At least one portion of the material flow channel has a plurality of bends and at least one branching intersection adapted to promote turbulence in a liquid flowing therethrough. The molding cavity includes at least one outwardly extending protrusion that forms a deep dimple that extends through the cover of the golf ball to and/or into the underlying component of the golf ball upon molding. The outwardly extending protrusion has a height greater than or equal to the thickness of the cover.

Claims (40)

1. A process for forming a cover layer for a golf ball, said process comprising the steps of:

providing an intermediate ball including a core;

providing a reaction injection molding apparatus having a generally spherical molding chamber with a molding surface defined by (i) a plurality of first raised regions for forming a plurality of dimples on said cover layer, each of said first raised regions having a first height, and (ii) a plurality of second raised regions, each of said second raised regions having a second height greater than or equal to the thickness of the cover layer, and an assembly for administering a flowable material into said molding chamber;

providing to said molding apparatus a plurality of flowable reactants suitable for forming said cover layer for said golf ball;

positioning said intermediate ball within said molding chamber such that said plurality of second raised regions of said molding surface contact and retain said intermediate ball within said molding chamber; and

administering said flowable reactants into said molding chamber and generally between said intermediate ball and said molding surface to thereby cure said flowable reactants and form said cover layer, wherein said cover layer has said plurality of dimples and a second plurality of dimples defined by said plurality of second raised regions.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein said second raised regions have a height of from about 0.005 to about 0.050 inches.

3. The process of claim 1 wherein during said administering step, said flowable reactants are mixed with one another.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein said flowable reactants comprise at least two of a polyol, a polyamine, and a polyisocyanate.

5. The process of claim 1 , wherein said step of providing to said molding apparatus said flowable reactants is performed by:

providing a polyol material to said molding apparatus;

providing a polyisocyanate material to said molding apparatus; and

reacting said polyol material and said polyisocyanate material to form a polyurethane material.

6. The process of claim 5 , wherein said reacting step is at least partially performed in said molding chamber.

7. The process of claim 5 , wherein each of said polyol material and said polyisocyanate material are administered into said molding chamber at a pressure of from about 150 bar to about 195 bar.

8. The process of claim 5 , wherein during said administering step, said polyol material and said polyisocyanate material have about the same viscosity.

9. The process of claim 5 , wherein during said administering step, said polyol material is at a temperature of from about 80° F. to about 220° F.

10. The process of claim 5 , wherein during said administering step, said polyisocyanate material is at a temperature of from about 80° F. to about 220° F.

11. A process for forming a layer on a golf ball care, said method comprising the steps of:

providing a golf ball core;

providing a plurality of flowable reactants adapted for forming said layer on said golf ball core;

providing a mold including (i) a generally spherical molding chamber having a molding surface including a plurality of raised protrusions that form a plurality of deep dimples in said layer wherein the height of said raised protrusion is greater than the thickness of said layer, and (ii) provisions for introducing said flowable reactants into said molding chamber,

concentrically positioning said golf ball core in said molding chamber such that said plurality of raised protrusions contact said golf ball core; and

introducing said flowable reactants into said molding chamber whereby said flowable reactants flow between said golf ball core and said molding surface of said molding chamber and react to thereby cure said flowable reactants and form said layer, wherein said plurality of deep dimples in said layer is equal to or greater than the thickness of said layer.

12. The process of claim 11 , wherein said flowable reactants form a polyurethane material.

13. The process of claim 12 , wherein said flowable reactants include (i) a polyol component and (ii) a polyisocyanate component.

14. The process of claim 13 , wherein said step of introducing said flowable reactants into said molding chamber includes chemically reacting said polyol component with said polyisocyanate component.

15. The process of claim 13 , wherein each of said polyol component and said polyisocyanate component are introduced into said molding chamber at a pressure of from about 150 bar to about 195 bar.

16. The process of claim 15 , wherein said polyol component and said polyisocyanate component are administered at a pressure of about 180 bar.

17. The process of claim 13 , wherein during said administering step, said polyol component and said polyisocyanate component have about the same viscosity.

18. A process for forming a golf ball having at least one dimple that extends through an outer layer of said ball, said process comprising:

providing an intermediate golf ball assembly;

providing a molding apparatus including a generally spherical molding chamber having a first population of raised regions for forming a plurality of dimples on an outer layer of said golf ball, and at least one other raised region having a height that is greater than the thickness of said outer layer;

positioning said intermediate golf ball assembly in said molding chamber;

administering a plurality of flowable reactants adapted to form said outer layer, to said molding apparatus; and

curing a product of said flowable reactants to thereby form said outer layer.

19. The process of claim 18 , wherein upon performing said administering step, said flowable reactants are introduced around said intermediate golf ball assembly in said molding chamber.

20. The process of claim 18 , wherein upon positioning said intermediate golf ball assembly in said molding chamber, said other raised region of said molding chamber contacts said intermediate golf ball assembly.

21. The process of claim 18 , wherein said plurality of flowable reactants include a polyisocyanate component and a polyol component.

22. The process of claim 21 , wherein during said administering step, said polyol component and said polyisocyanate component have about the same viscosity.
