Abstract

Disclosed herein are panelized wall systems and methods for their construction, wherein the wall systems have elastomeric joints that are resistant to cracking. The walls are constructed with an elastomeric joint tape. The joint tape is made from an elastomeric backing material with an adhesive applied to a face, and optionally, a release liner laminated to the adhesive. In use, building panels are fastened to a frame with the edges adjacent to each other. The joint tape is applied to the seam between the panels and the wall is then finished with an elastomeric finish.

Claims (56)

1. A method of constructing a panelized wall system comprising:

positioning at least two building panels over a frame, wherein

each panel comprises a front surface, a back surface, and a plurality of edges,

the back surfaces of the panels are positioned over the frame, and

the two panels are positioned adjacent to each other, forming a seam between the adjacent panels; fastening the panels to the frame;

forming an elastomeric joint, wherein the elastomeric joint comprises a backing material adhered over the seam between the adjacent panels, and

applying an exterior elastomeric finish to the panelized wall system;

wherein the elastomeric finish does not develop any visible cracks under a racking load that causes the panelized wall system to deflect 1″ according to the test method described in ASTM E-72 (98).

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the building panels are fiber cement.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjacent panels abut.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjacent panels are positioned with a gap therebetween.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the gap is about ⅛″ wide.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the elastomeric joint further comprises a caulk applied to the seam between the panels.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the caulk is a polyurethane caulk.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the backing material is a fabric.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the backing material is from about 0.0005″ to about 0.04″ thick.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the fabric is a non-woven polyester fabric.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the fabric is a polyamide mesh.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the backing material is about 3″ wide.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elastomeric joint further comprises a ceramic putty applied over the backing material.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the elastomeric joint further comprises an elastomeric joint filler applied over the ceramic putty.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the exterior elastomeric finish comprises an elastomeric primer and an elastomeric texture layer.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the exterior elastomeric finish is a texture coating.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the frame is a wood frame.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises shear panels.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises a moisture barrier.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises a water break.

21. A panelized wall system comprising

a frame;

at least two building panels, wherein

each panel comprises a front surface, a back surface, and a plurality of edges,

the back surfaces of the panels positioned over the frame,

the two panels are positioned adjacent to each other, forming a seam between the adjacent panels, and

the panels are fastened to the frame;

an elastomeric joint comprising a backing material adhered over the seam between the adjacent panels; and

an exterior elastomeric finish applied to the panelized wall system;

wherein the elastomeric finish does not develop any visible cracks under a racking load that causes the panelized wall system to deflect 1″, according to the test method described in ASTM E-72 (98).

22. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the building panels are fiber cement.

23. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the adjacent panels abut.

24. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the adjacent panels are positioned with a gap therebetween.

25. The panelized wall system of claim 24 , wherein the gap is about ⅛″ wide.

26. The panelized wall system of claim 24 , wherein the elastomeric joint further comprises a caulk applied to the seam between the panels.

27. The panelized wall system of claim 26 , wherein the caulk is a polyurethane caulk.

28. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the backing material is a fabric.

29. The panelized wall system of claim 28 , wherein the backing material is from about 0.0005″ to about 0.04″ thick.

30. The panelized wall system of claim 28 , wherein the fabric is a non-woven polyester fabric.

31. The panelized wall system of claim 28 , wherein the fabric is a polyamide mesh.

32. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the backing material is about 3″ wide.

33. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the elastomeric joint further comprises a ceramic putty applied over the backing material.

34. The panelized wall system of claim 33 , wherein the elastomeric joint further comprises an elastomeric joint filler applied over the ceramic putty.

35. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , whererin the exterior elastomeric finish comprises an elastomeric primer and an elastomeric texture layer.

36. The panelized wall system of claim 35 , wherein the exterior elastomeric finish is a texture coating.

37. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the frame is a wood frame.

38. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the frame comprises shear panels.

39. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the frame comprises a moisture barrier.

40. The panelized wall system of claim 21 , wherein the frame comprises a water break.
