Abstract

Navigating on a display includes tracking coordinate information of an input tool on a display and moving a visible portion of a page of information on the display a distance equal to a change in the coordinate information of the input tool multiplied by a multiplier.

Claims (62)

1. A method comprising:

superimposing a viewing window on a page of information, wherein:

the page of information is larger than the viewing window, and

the viewing window includes a screen real estate that reveals a subset of information on the page of information;

enabling a user to touch and drag the viewing window relative to the page of information in horizontal, vertical, diagonal and other directions via an input tool;

tracking coordinate information of the input tool while used to touch and drag the viewing window;

identifying a change in the coordinate information of the input tool;

multiplying the change in the coordinate information of the input tool by a multiplier having a value other than one or zero to determine a movement amount of the viewing window; and

moving the viewing window relative to the page of information by the determined movement amount.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein enabling the user to touch and drag the viewing window includes:

enabling the user to position the input tool on the viewing window; and

enabling the user to drag the viewing window with the input tool.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the input tool includes a stylus and the viewing window includes a touehsereen such that tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the stylus while used to touch and drag the touchscreen.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the touchscreen includes a resistive sensor and tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the input tool using the resistive sensor.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the touchscreen includes a capacitive sensor and tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the input tool using the capacitive sensor.

6. The method of claim 3 wherein the viewing window includes an acoustic wave sensor and tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the input tool using the acoustic wave sensor.

7. The method of claim 3 wherein the touchscreen includes an infrared sensor and tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the input tool using the infrared sensor.

8. The method of claim 3 wherein the touchscreen includes a sensor activated by touch and tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking a touch activation force by the input tool on the touchscreen.

9. The method of claim 3 wherein the input tool includes a stylus having a resistive property and the touchscreen includes a resistive sensor operable to detect the resistive property of the stylus such that tracking includes tracking the stylus with the resistive sensor.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the input tool includes a mouse such that tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the mouse.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the input tool is a finger such that tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the finger.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the input tool is a wireless device such that tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the wireless device.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the wireless device is a wireless mouse such that tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the coordinate information of the wireless mouse.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein:

tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking vertical coordinates of the input tool; and

multiplying the change in the coordinate information of the input tool by the multiplier includes multiplying the change in the coordinate information of the input tool by a vertical multiplier having value other than one or zero to determine a vertical movement amount of the viewing window.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein:

tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking horizontal coordinates of the input tool; and

multiplying the change in the coordinate information of the input tool by the multiplier includes multiplying the change in the coordinate information of the input tool by a horizontal multiplier having value other than one or zero to determine a horizontal movement amount of the viewing window.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein:

tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking horizontal coordinates of the input tool; and

multiplying the change in the coordinate information of the input tool by the multiplier includes multiplying the change in the coordinate information of the input tool by a horizontal multiplier having value other than one or zero to determine a horizontal movement amount of the viewing window.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising defining the multiplier in response to an input from the user.

18. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving the multiplier directly from the user.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the multiplier is less than one such that moving the viewing window relative to the page of information by the determined movement amount includes moving the viewing window relative to the page of information a distance less than the change in the coordinate information of the input tool.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the multiplier is greater than one such that moving the viewing window relative to the page of information by the determined movement amount includes moving the viewing window relative to the page of information a distance greater than the change in the coordinate information of the input tool.

21. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the coordinate information includes pixel coordinates on the viewing window;

tracking the coordinate information of the input tool includes tracking the pixel coordinates of the position of the input tool on the viewing window; and

moving the viewing window relative to the page of information includes moving the viewing window relative to the page of information a distance equal to a change in the pixel coordinates of the input tool multiplied by the multiplier.

22. The method of claim 1 further comprising defining the multiplier based on an acceleration of the input tool, such that the movement amount of the viewing window is affected by the acceleration of the input tool.

23. The method of claim 1 further comprising defining the multiplier based on a velocity of the input tool, such that the movement amount of the viewing window is affected by the velocity of the input tool.

24. The method of claim 1 wherein the page of information includes a HTML page of information.

25. The method of claim 1 wherein enabling the user to touch and drag the viewing window relative to the page of information includes enabling the user to touch and drag the viewing window in all directions.

26. The method of claim 1 wherein enabling the user to touch and drag the viewing window includes enabling the user to position the input tool on any portion within the screen real estate of the viewing window and drag the screen real estate in horizontal, vertical, diagonal and other directions.

27. A system comprising:

a page of information;

a viewing window superimposed on the page of information that is larger than the viewing window, wherein the viewing window includes a screen real estate that reveals a subset of information on the page of information;

a stylus detectable by the viewing window; and

a processor operable to:

enable a user to touch and drag the viewing window relative to the page of information in horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and other directions via the stylus;

track coordinate information of the stylus while used to touch and drag the viewing window;

identify a change in the coordinate information of the stylus;

multiply the change in the coordinate information of the stylus by a multiplier having a value other than one or zero to determine a movement amount of the viewing window; and

move the viewing window relative to the page of information by the determined movement amount.

28. The system of claim 27 wherein the system further comprises a personal digital assistance including the processor and the viewing window.

29. The system of claim 27 wherein the system further comprises a web phone including the processor and the viewing window.

30. The system of claim 27 wherein the system further comprises a hand held computer including the processor and the viewing window.

31. The system of claim 27 wherein the system further comprises a monitor including the processor and the viewing window.

32. The system of claim 27 wherein the system further comprises a database storage unit coupled to the processor, the database storage unit being operable to store the coordinate information.

33. The system of claim 27 wherein the processor is further operable to define the multiplier based on an acceleration of the stylus, such that the movement of the viewing window is affected by the acceleration of the stylus.

34. The system of claim 27 wherein the processor is further operable to define the multiplier based on a velocity of the stylus, such that the movement of the viewing window is affected by the velocity of the stylus.
